error using str.writef

is there any reason that this error is happening:

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a0414'

Cannot use parentheses when calling a Sub

/LANA/SchoolLevelLANARegistrationEdit.asp, line 152

str.writef ("Updated {0} records (1}", array(updated,SSLBoolx))

Also, when posting using the update or insert methods, is there a
correct way to handle embedded characters ( i.e. "", ', @, %, *, etc)

if it says you cant use them .. then remove them .. it works without ..
