Dear Colleagues,

Hope you are doing well.

I wanted to share an excellent opportunity for students — the ASME Student Mechanism & Robot Design Competition (SMRDC 2026), part of the 2026 ASME IDETC/CIE Conference.

Would you mind helping circulate this to your students, labs, or student organizations? Participation is free, and the competition is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

This competition primarily emphasizes mechanical design, innovative mechanisms, robotic hardware, prototyping, and system integration, rather than purely control theory or AI/learning algorithms. Example topics/projects may include:

  • Novel robotic grippers and robotic end-effectors
  • Soft/compliant robotic mechanisms
  • Variable stiffness or adaptive mechanisms
  • Reconfigurable robots and transformable structures
  • Walking, crawling, climbing, or bio-inspired mechanisms
  • Underwater robotic platforms and marine manipulation systems
  • Medical or rehabilitation assistive devices
  • Mechanism design for humanoids or wearable robotics
  • Tendon-driven, cable-driven, or linkage-based robotic systems
  • Innovative transmissions, actuation systems, or deployable structures

Students may participate with research projects, capstone projects, prototypes, or independent designs. Finalists may receive travel stipend support, and top teams receive cash awards. The final round may be attended either in person (Houston, TX) or online.

Important Dates

  • Letter of Intent Submission: May 1 – June 21, 2026
  • Final Written Report: June 21, 2026
  • Notification of Finalists: June 30, 2026
  • Final Round: August 23–26, 2026
