Subject: Invitation to American Society of Mechanical Engineers's (ASME) Human Powered Vehicle Challenge-2013

Dear ASME Student Section Chairs,

It is our pleasure to invite students from your institution to participate in the inaugural ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge in India, organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The event is being hosted by Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, in partnership with Delhi Technological University, on 13-15th December 2013 in New Delhi.

The Human Powered Vehicle Challenge (HPVC) is a prominent competition in the United States and has seen participation from some of the best engineering colleges in the world. It is being organized for the first time in the Asia-Pacific region and IIT Delhi is privileged to get the opportunity to host the pilot event open only to students in India.

ASME's HPVC provides an opportunity for undergraduate engineering students to demonstrate the application of sound engineering design principles in the development of sustainable and practical transportation alternatives. In the HPVC, students work in teams to design and build efficient, highly engineered vehicles for everyday use – from commuting to work, to carrying goods to the market.

The challenge comprises of three events:

  1. Endurance Race – The objective of the race is to provide teams the ability to demonstrate the functionality, agility, and durability of their vehicles. The Endurance Event is a lengthy, timed relay race with multiple laps around a closed course.
  2. Drag Race – This event gives the teams an opportunity to demonstrate the speed and reliability of their vehicles in a tournament format. It is a tournament style race where vehicles compete two at a time to be the first to cross a set finish line, from a standing start. Each team shall include multiple drivers with joint scoring categories for both genders.
  3. Design Event - It tests the vehicle’s theoretical design and analysis. The scores are given in the following categories –
    • Design
    • Technology Innovation
    • Analysis
    • Testing
    • Safety
    • Aesthetics

In a world where fuel crisis is impeding, global warming is causing world-wide panic and population boom is creating congestion, the requirement for a green mode of transport is dire. HPVC provides students with a platform to showcase their skills in tackling this immediate problem facing the world at large.
