Hi,

Following the design presentation for the Liberty EFx competition, we had some questions about judges' recommendations for physically testing our RPS. In Section V. Part D of the rules, it states: "In order to participate in the competition, all RPS structural components (including the continuous hoop) must be physically tested or analyzed according to the top & side load requirements". What is meant by this? Does FEA count as analysis?

We presented FEA data showing no areas with a factor of safety below 1. Additionally, simulations show deformation of the roll frame was within less than 2 millimeters of deformation from the top load, and 2 centimeters of deformation with the side load. The rules for the side load specify deformation of less than 3.8cm. Is there something else that is required to get our vehicle cleared to compete?

We plan on having the heaviest team member get into the vehicle while it is flipped on its side and top. If any issues occur, additional reinforcement welding will be done.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best,

Hi Dean
Both FEA analysis and physical testing are required to be done for the RPS.
You can refer to Appendix 1- Design event score sheet to see the scoring criteria used by design judges for the same.

Hi Ankur,

I've seen a team in the past use a Forklift to apply a load case onto their RPS.

Do you have any other recommendations on how teams can physically test their RPS within a tight budget that would allow them to meet the requirements?

Hi Tyler
We've seen trams use gym equipments (barbell and weights) for the RPS testing.

We do not have any specific requirements for the method of testing, you can easily choose wharever method suits your needs (and satisfies the loading conditions)
