Hi everyone!

I have a doubt regarding the motor specification: in the rules it is stated that: "The electric motor can be purchased or self-built for the competition and must be rated for a maximum of 500 W.", so 500 W is the maximum nominal power or the maximum peak power? I'm asking since I've found this motor, which has nominal power of 250W and peak power that, in certain conditions, can exceed 1200W: would it be compliant with the rules?

Thank you,
Francesco

Francesco,

Your question, and my initial response has lead to a more in depth discussion amongst the judges on this topic. Max power of motors is often not a published number as they are very dependent on time and temperature. Therefore we have amended the rules for this year to specify motors based on their rated nominal power. Which is a better representation of the motors true capabilities than a published max power number would be.

With this change the motor you linked in your question is acceptable. Sorry for the confusion.

500W is the maximum amount of power allowed to be output by the motor. The specific motor you reference is designed to put out 920W in "Boost" mode at 80rpm pedaling input. This would violate our rules, and this motor should not be used.
