In our American Sign Language/Interpreter Education (ASLIE) and Master of Science in Secondary Education (MSSE) for Students Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing teacher preparation departments at National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology, we want to investigate various concerns and trends in terms of meeting the Common Core State Standards that are aligned with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. To learn more about common trends with other ASL educators in the United States, this is where the survey comes in. The purpose of this survey is to identify the issues that all educators who teach ASL in K-12 educational settings and colleges encounter. The survey will help us better understand the national needs of teaching practice and research for K-12 ASL educators and college educators.

The Principal Investigator of this particular study is Dr. Kim B. Kurz. The other team research members are Drs. Chris Kurz, Susan Lane-Outlaw and Gerald Bateman. Questions about any risk to you because of participation in this project may be addressed to Drs. Kim Kurz (Kim....@rit.edu) and Chris Kurz (cak...@rit.edu) or the RIT’s Office of Human Subjects Research by emailing them at HS...@rit.edu.

With the results from the survey, we will be able to revisit out teacher preparation curriculum, create and provide training to professionals in ASL education (K-12 teachers, post-secondary educators and faculty, and researchers) in the United States.

If you have already taken this survey, there is no need to do it again.  If you have not, please take some time to fill out the survey. It includes questions about your background, your experience with the Common Core State Standards/ACTFL and your thoughts on the trends and issues that are important in ASL education.

Participation is voluntary and you can choose not to take part or stop participating at any time with no penalty. The survey will take you less than 20 minutes to complete. Your participation will remain anonymous. Only the research team will have access to the survey results. We aim to disseminate the results widely. We don't anticipate any risks to you from participating in this survey. By clicking on the link and participating in the survey, you are willing to consent to enter, respond, participate and submit the survey.  We need all responses by November 15th.

Please forward this survey to the party or parties responsible for delivering ASL instruction in your setting.

Thank you very much for your assistance with this project.

The survey link can be found here: https://clipboard.rit.edu/take.cfm?sid=43A12FAA

Sincerely,

Sheila Puzio, RIT/NITD, MSSE Graduate Assistant to Dr. Kim Kurz & Dr. Chris Kurz
