Viewthe help topics for the software (includes some FAQs; also lists some changes for updated versions of applications) Errata from the textbook are here. The updater in older versions of the software will no longer be supported. You can obtain the current version of the software for your OS from Cambridge's resoures page for the Burger et al. textbook. (Click on the General Resources link on the left and then download the version appropriate for your OS). By early 2024 there should be versions for Mac OS (later than OS 10.14; universal for both x86 and Apple Mx chips), Windows (8.1 -11) both for x86 32 bit and 64 bit (if only one is there, it will still be the 32 bit version), and Linux (Linux Mint 16 or later, CentOS 7.0 or later, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS or later, Debian 6.0 or later, OpenSUSE 11.3 or later, Fedora 13 Desktop or later), also will have x86 32-bit and 64-bit versions. If you need an ARM processor version of the software, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Advanced Windows user note: You will notice that the "XXX Libs" folders are *huge*. And they are pretty nearly the same.If you need to save space, I think you could make a single folder of Libs and then make shortcuts named "XXX Libs" pointing to the common libs folder. I'm not too sure what would happen on doing an update (maybe nothing bad), so keep that in mind if you try this.

Important Upgrade Note: The update mechanism in v2.1 of the geophysics software is broken (for sure on Macs, possibly all OSes)! If you have updated to v2.1, to get later updates you can simply download the version at Cambridge Press (link above).

William Murray Telford (1916-1997) was a Canadian physicist and geophysicist who made great contributions to mining geophysics. His name is familiar to most geophysicists as the lead author of the popular textbook Exploration Geophysics.

Completely revised and updated, this new edition of the popular and highly regarded textbook, Applied Geophysics, describes the physical methods involved in exploration for hydrocarbons and minerals. These tools include gravity, magnetic, seismic, electrical, electromagnetic, and radioactivity studies. All aspects of these methods are described, including theoretical considerations, data acquisition, and data processing and interpretation, with the objective of locating concentrations of natural resources and defining their extent. In the past fourteen years or so since the writing of Applied Geophysics, there have been many changes in the field of exploration geophysics. The authors give full treatment to changes in this field, which include improved techniques for calculating gravity fields, the use of proton-precession and optically-pumped magnetometers, improved quality of seismic data, magnetotelluric as a practical exploration method, new electromagnetic exploration methods, the use of gamma-ray spectrometers in radioactive exploration, and improved well-logging techniques. The intent is to be practical, and thus many actual examples and problems are given. Moreover, wherever possible in this edition the authors adopt the use of Systme Internationale (SI) units, which were not in standared use at the time of the first edition. The reader needs only a general background knowledge of geology, physics, and mathematics. Most of the math can be skipped by those interested only in the results. Advanced mathematical concepts are explained in the appendix.

An Introduction to Applied and Environmental Geophysics, 2nd Edition, describes the rapidly developing field of near-surface geophysics. The book covers a range of applications including mineral, hydrocarbon and groundwater exploration, and emphasises the use of geophysics in civil engineering and in environmental investigations. Following on from the international popularity of the first edition, this new, revised, and much expanded edition contains additional case histories, and descriptions of geophysical techniques not previously included in such textbooks.

The level of mathematics and physics is deliberately kept to a minimum but is described qualitatively within the text. Relevant mathematical expressions are separated into boxes to supplement the text. The book is profusely illustrated with many figures, photographs and line drawings, many never previously published. Key source literature is provided in an extensive reference section; a list of web addresses for key organisations is also given in an appendix as a valuable additional resource.

The second edition is ideal for students wanting a broad introduction to the subject and is also designed for practising civil and geotechnical engineers, geologists, archaeologists and environmental scientists who need an overview of modern geophysical methods relevant to their discipline. While the first edition was the first textbook to provide such a comprehensive coverage of environmental geophysics, the second edition is even more far ranging in terms of techniques, applications and case histories.

Designed from many years of classroom interactions and including well-honed exercises for students, the book is intended to accompany a one semester course covering all the key processing techniques needed for students preparing for careers in the academic world and in the rapidly growing oil and mineral exploration industry. These methods include digital seismic data processing, seismic migration, and subsurface model building.

This book joins a long tradition of widely used texts from other UH geophysics professors including Margaret Bishop's 1960 text on subsurface mapping, Robert Sheriff's 1990 text on applied geophysics, Chris Liner's 2004 text on 3D seismology, and recently Arthur Weglein's 2012 text (with Robert Stolt) on seismic imaging and inversion (see article on and review of Weglein/Stolt text).

On behalf of the Chairman of the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Science, prof. Tomš Opatrn we would like to ask you to comment on the Intention of Establishment of a new University Institute, which is saved in a zipped file on the website of the Academic Senate under Documents for the Establishment of new University Institute. These are material intentions of two new UP internal regulations, a proposal for organizational change and other supplementary documents. They are divided to respond to the individual parts of the relevant resolution of the AS UP of June 19, 2019.

Rectors Honorable mention to authors of expert books 2019

Rector will again appreciate authors of selected expert books in the fields of natural, medical, social sciences and the humanities. Every employee of the University, including the author, may submit a proposal for honorary recognition. Popular scientific publications and textbooks will not be included in the competition.

The expert book must formally meet the criteria of result "B" according to the valid Methodology of the Evaluation of Research Organizations and the Evaluation of Programs of Targeted Support of Research, Development and Innovation (Methodology 17+). To be included in the competition, please send the book in printed form and the cover letter in electronic form to Mgr. Alena Jarošov, alena.j...@upol.cz at the Department of Science and Research until Monday, September 30, tel.: 585 634 011. Popular scientific publications, textbooks and textbooks will not be included in the competition.
