I have tried booting from recovery partition on external drive and from an install dvd, as well as a usb stick. With yosemite and mountain lion, even tried snow leopard, but it always boots about 30% of the way and stalls there, forever.
What I need is to re-install mountain lion. My external drive that I use to try to boot has yosemite and it boots just fine on the older laptop, so nothing is wrong with that installed system. A usb stick with 10.6 or 10.8 or 10.10 behaves the same.
It would've been awesome if the boot went through. That machine was running mountain lion and that is what I will put back on there, but I assume if yosemite starts working properly again, so will mountain lion.
It's very slow on usb, so it took close to 10mins to get to about the same spot where yosemite was stalling. It did stall for a couple of minutes, but when I saw it resume and pass 50% progress, I thought perhaps something was happening, and it sped up for the rest of the boot up to roughly 70% of progress, then stalled there.
