Outside of a good grasp of basic logic, is mastery of higher logic
necessary to do good philosophy?

Seems to me as if basic logic should be enough. Not being a
"logician", I don't even know what's involved in "higher" logic.

Most often philosophical disputes revolve around premises,
perceptions, thought structures that incorporate experience, learning
and logic, etc. Groups or movements that have goals and aims that
hold an ideal to be reached by humans are sometimes called
"philosophies", but are really more akin to rhetoric or religion.

Too much logic can be bad for ethical arguments. Sometimes being completely logical might lead to a lack of emotion or a wrong approach to ethics.

I would say it is utterly crucial. I don't know what you mean by 'higher' logic, but a good grasp of Aristotle's dialectic would be vital. Surprisingly, not many philosophers have a good grasp of this, which may be a clue as to their problems with philosophy.
