Following commands are useful to check the memory status on linux server ....
free -m ; free -t -m
/proc/meminfo ( egrep --color 'Mem|Cache|Swap' /proc/meminfo )
vmstat -s
top
atop
htop
In Gnome ( System menu > Choose Administration > System Monitor option)
