Dear previous participant,
Riga Technical University International
Summer School is happy to inform you that the theme and location for 2013 have been confirmed. "Local Shift" is going to take place in Cesis, Latvia, from July 27 to August 11. Please feel free to forward this call for applications to anyone who you think may be interested to take part in the course. Deadline for applying is May 7.
TOPIC
In an increasingly globalized world, the local is gradually making a comeback. It is a reflection of the growing ecological awareness, the human need for rootedness and identity, and the insatiable desire for novelty and uniqueness. Local traditions, local resources, local production is what distinguishes a place on the global map and what makes it relatable and meaningful locally.
However, the global should not be regarded as the enemy of localness, but as an integral part of its current dynamics. New possibilities of movement and communication have added new layers to the local economic, social and environmental realities. No place and no society can afford to remain static. Urban life requires both the depth of local culture, and the reach of global networks. The notion of “local” has shifted and calls for a revisit.
The
Summer School is going to study local issues and respond to them with contextual, custom-made proposals, yet keeping a global perspective in mind. We are going to work closely with local residents, learning from their knowledge of the territory and creating new links within communities and spaces. We are going to reposition values and programs to reveal new potentials, thus helping a local shift take place.
LOCATION
The
Summer School is going to take place in Cesis, one of the oldest towns in Latvia. It lies in Vidzeme Upland near the winding valley of river Gauja. In its 800 year long history Cesis has gone through periods of growth and prosperity as well as decline. Today, in response to the negative demographic trends Cesis puts emphasis on employing its medieval heritage and creating cultural events that bring a lively buzz into its streets.
PROGRAMME
Students will be offered an intensive two-week programme of lectures, discussions and workshops, as well as sightseeing tours and parties. The programme will be conducted by an international team of architects, urbanists and designers, representing both practice and academia. The
Summer School aims for increasing exchange of knowledge and endorsing understanding between different spatial and social disciplines.
WORKSHOPS
Several thematic workshops will be provided to the participants to choose from. Some of the units are going to research the social, economical and political realities of Cesis on both urban and regional scale, while others are going to design and build ephemeral installations in the public realm, using methods of architecture, industrial and graphic design. Students will be given an opportunity to work hands-on with actual event creating and spatial structures that accommodate public interactions.
PARTICIPANTS
During the
Summer School students work in a multidisciplinary and international environment. Focus of the course is architecture and urbanism, but it also welcomes students of related disciplines: geography, sociology, design, arts etc. Applicants should have finished at least one year of studies by the beginning of the course, be fluent in English and keen to work in groups.
PARTICIPATION FEE
The fee including registration, tuition, accommodation, meals and social programme is EUR 635. A number of partial bursaries are available.
ACADEMIC CREDITS
Participants of the
Summer School will be awarded a Certificate of Riga Technical University and 3 ECTS points upon completion of the course.
