Has anyone had the opportunity to retrofit a different alternator into their TR6?  If so, what alternator did you use?  What did you have to do to make it fit, etc.?  My alternator is giving me trouble and I thought it might be a good idea to retrofit a more modern one if I could.  One that can put out more than 43 amps (ouch).  :)

Thanks.

Mike,

Thanks for the info, but I was hoping for a little more than 55 amps.  My car has an electric fan and electronic fuel injection.  When the car is running with the lights on, heat, and the electric cooling fan comes on, it maxes the poor 43 amp alternator out and then some dragging the voltage down.  55 likely wouldn't be enough.  However, can you point to the specific alternator you were referring to so I could investigate if a larger output version is available?

I did find this from BNR which seems to be a direct drop in at 75 amps, but I'm not sure I want to be married to BNR.  A generic GM alternator would be preferable as you can get them anywhere.

I did find a guy who put a GM 10SI alternator in his 75 TR6, but it required quite a few modifications.  He documented it pretty well here:

I just don't know if I want to go through all that cutting and grinding, some of which you'd have to do again if you ever had to replace the alternator.

Mike,

Thanks.  I appreciate it.  Full disclosure, I ordered the BNR direct fit 75 amp.  Time is running out, and I just want to drive my 6 for the next few months.  Watching it sit in the driveway is killing me.  However, if we can get some information about a 1 wire GM that fits without any grinding, that would benefit all of us monetarily and electrically.  The 43 amp original is just so lacking once you've added anything to your car like an electric cooling fan.  Plus, the GM alternators are just so much easier to come by.  The next time I need one, I would love to get one easily without worrying about where it's coming from.  I searched on that number, 7153, but didn't come up with anything.

Thanks for your help Mike.

Chris
