Hello,

So I did the Operating Systems course (for undergraduate/masters students) here at MPI. The topics covered here were the same as we had studied at BITS. However, here there was a programming project about implementing single-threaded kernel functionalities (like entire virtual memory management) based on Pintos. Most US universities have this very same or related projects as part of the OS curriculum. Even the IITs and IIITs have Pintos-based projects as part of their OS course curriculum.

Since I was not an active member of CSA, I was wondering if anyone ever took up this issue when talks about curriculum revision were going on, and if so, what was the outcome!

I just feel that a practical project like this is MUST to understand an operating system.

Hi Arpan (and everyone),

It did feature in our discussions about curriculum redesign but in hindsight, I think we proposed so many changes that most of it was lost. I think almost all friends I have talked to have confessed that a lack of on-hands experience has been a bummer in interviews, jobs or further studies.

I have attached the pdf for your perusal and further comments. (OS discussion on page 3)

Lesson:
* We could do a quick review of what we proposed then (2.5 years back) and what has come of it (or not)
* We should provide more specifics about our suggestions. Eg: the OS suggestion mentions the right things but does not describe how to do them

Also, specifically about the OS point, I feel that the faculty must be definitely aware of it but they are skipping it intentionally for whatever reasons.

Do provide your feedback on the topic.
