CHECK OUR WONDERCON PANELS
From El Tigre and The Book of Life to I, Chihuahua, and El Guapo vs. the Narco Vampires, Jorge R. Gutierrez has built one of the most unmistakable visual worlds in modern animation—where Lucha Libre spectacle, Mesoamerican mythology, bold Meximalist design, and raw emotional storytelling collide. In this exclusive WonderCon conversation presented by ASIFA-Hollywood, Gutierrez reveals how the theatrical energy of wrestling—its masks, archetypes, legacy, and larger-than-life drama—transforms into unforgettable animated characters and richly layered worlds. He is joined by character designer and voice actress Sandra Equihua (El Tigre, The Book of Life, Maya and the Three, El Guapo, and I, Chihuahua,) and art director/visual development artist Roman Laney (El Tigre, The Book of Life, El Guapo, and I, Chihuahua). This creative team shares behind-the-scenes insights into their collaborative process, artistic evolution, and the fearless world-building that defines their work.

ASIFA-Hollywood teams with renowned animation historian Jerry Beck (CartoonResearch.com, MeTV Toons) for a big-screen celebration of classic theatrical shorts featuring Popeye, Bugs Bunny, and legendary work by Chuck Jones and Tex Avery. Presented with historical context and live commentary, this screening invites audiences to rediscover why these cartoons became foundational to animation fandom and why they still resonate today.

Join us alongside LatinX in Animation at WonderCon for "Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness: From Screen to Comics." The masks behind the epic animated series, now turned into an epic comic book, take fans behind the scenes of their latest comic based on the Mexican animated series. Animators Calavera Hermanos share how the story evolved from screen to page. The conversation is moderated by director, writer, animator, and ASIFA-Hollywood Advisory Board member Jorge R. Gutierrez.

Prime-time animated television changed the perception of what cartoons could be. This panel explores how shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy helped transform animation into a vehicle for satire, social commentary, and long-form storytelling aimed at general audiences rather than children. Moderated by voice actor Eric Bauza (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck), panelists include director Cecilia Aranovich (Harley Quinn, Bob’s Burgers), supervising producer Mike Hollingsworth (BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie), producer Monica Mitchell (Rick and Morty, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut), John Semper (Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Static Shock), and production designer/colorist Carol Wyatt (Rick and Morty, The Simpsons).
