Hello Junghee,

Glad that you are interested to come to the meeting. The API Mentoring Group does meet at CSWE and/or SSWR. In fact, we did meet earlier this year at SSWR in San Diego. However, I won't be able to attend 2014 SSWR at San Antonio because of my other travel arrangement.  However, will plan to meet at SSWR the following year.

Stay well.

Dr. Lee

Hello Evaon,

Glad to hear from you from Hong Kong!!  Anyhow, yours is a thoughtful suggestion and we'll definitely keep that in mind when we get together.  Yes, practice experience of international doctoral students will definitely be a plus when they search for faculty positions.

Look forward to have you with us at the gathering next year:)))

Hi everyone,

Since I am on leave and in Hong Kong now for a year I won't be able to attend SSWR or CSWE.  Thank you Mo Yee for keeping up with the mentoring program.  One thing I notice with our International doctoral students is their lack of opportunity to practice social work in the US.  Many of the students do a combine MSW/PhD program and therefore do not have any post MSW practice experience in Social Work.  Without post MSW practice experience the faculty will not be able to teach practice courses. For small programs like ours we cannot hire tenure track faculty who cannot teach practice, therefore, restricted our abilities to hire international doctoral scholars who lack US clinical experiences.  One thing the mentor can help may be to suggest/advise International doctoral students how to obtain clinical experiences while they are working on their PhD after they got their MSW.  This will likely put them one to two years behind before they can complete their PhD program, but this may help them seek tenure track positions in smaller programs/ universities.
