Here is an interesting best practice that you may to consider adopting/adapting.
You are copied on this email because of the important role you play in program management through a marketing lens. As you might be aware, Kiran (comm specialist from PSI/India) and I have monthly coordination calls with different members of PSI global departments which support our region in the areas of marketing (including communication). Last week, in response to a question as to what best practices we (as a region) could adopt from other regions/countries, Jen Christian connected me with Joyce (PSI/Kenya) regarding a nice practice that they have developed. I spoke with Joyce and believe that the Kenya approach of platform management linking the SP and the DELTA is worth studying and emulating/adapting. I know that some of you are already doing something similar. But am still sharing as you might pick up some good ideas.
Here are the two elements of this approach.
1. A model to effective link the five year platform strategic plan, annual plans, departmental plans and individual P&L goals (MBOs).
2. Show how the DELTA plans are an integral component of Departmental Plans and directly influence individual P&L goals as well.
Here is a VERY brief outline of how PSI/Kenya has been implementing this practice since 2010.
1. The 5 year platform strategic plan (SP) guides all key decision making processes.
2. In Sep, the senior management meets to take stock of their overall progress against the platform's annual plans (Platform PMP). At this point, broad directions for the next year are outlined.
3. Between Oct-Dec, the Departmental PMPs are developed. Subsequently, the individual MBOs (P&L goals) are developed.
Attached is a powerpoint document (2 slides) which shows this process. Further, also attached are samples of the platform and departmental PMPs and an individual P&L plan.
In Joyce's words "this flow has provided a much needed link between the platform SP, departmental goals and individual priorities. In the past we did all three, but often these were not linked well."
As we begin the second half of the year, this is a good time to take a look at your own processes and see what lessons you can learn from this experience. Would you/your platform benefit from such a similar exercise?
Thank you Jen and a bigger thanks to Joyce for taking the time to send and walk me through these documents. If you have any questions, please reach out to Joyce (cced) or contact me. If you would like to discuss how best these practices could be incorporated into your platforms (including how best to convince others on your teams), I will be happy to discuss this with you.
Sincerely,
Sanjay
