Inaugural Edinburgh Research Software Engineers (RSE) Meeting =============================================================
Date and Time: 1-3pm, Wed 26th September. Venue: Room G.03, Bayes Centre, 47 Potterrow, Edinburgh, EH8 9BT.
This first meeting will be to establish an Edinburgh RSE community serving the local area. We want to determine the interests of this community and where a local RSE organisation can provide the most benefit to people in the Edinburgh area. Our aim is that Edinburgh RSE will become a community led organisation, serving the needs of local people working in the RSE domain.
An outline plan for the meeting is:
13:00 Welcome 13:15 Research Software Engineers - Who / What / Why 13:30 Edinburgh RSE Community Bootstrap 14:00 Coffee / Cake / Networking 14:15 Bootstrap Outputs, Actions, Volunteers 14:45 Wrap up & Thanks 15:00 Close & Tidy up
Although we hope as many people as possible will stay for the full duration of the event, we realise that people are very busy and, as such, there is a natural break in the schedule at 2pm for those who cannot stay for the whole time. Even if you can only make it for the first half of the event, we hope you can make it along.
To get an idea of numbers we would ask you to please register an interests at:
Research Software Engineers are people in a variety of roles who understand and care about both good software and good research. It is an inclusive definition that covers a wide spectrum of people from a researcher who is primarily focused on getting results for papers but does a lot of programming programming to a software engineer who just happens to work for a research organisation.
Over the last three years the Research Software Engineer (RSE) community (https://rse.ac.uk) has been gaining traction throughout the UK and further afield. The RSE movement recognises that software plays a fundamental role in today's research and yet RSEs, the people whose main interest lies in developing the code that underpins much of this research, are not always appreciated or rewarded. The RSE movement is trying to rectify this amongst other things - see their web page for more details.
We hope to see many of you on the day.
