Hi everyone.
This Wednesday, September 11 at 10:30 a.m., the Ashland Bike Club has scheduled a truly multi-faceted, spectacular ride on the Cape. We’ll meet in the parking lot of the Tidal Flats Recreation Area in Bourne, Ma. The lot is located on the south side of the canal very close to the railroad bridge.
GPS Address (Preferred): Tidal Flats Recreation Area, Bourne, Ma
PLEASE READ: An alternate address to the same location is: 33 Canal Service Rd, Bourne, Ma. It’s probably better NOT to use this address because Google Maps incorrectly directed some of our members to a parking lot on the north side of the canal.
Route Name: ABC – Hog Island / Mashnee Island (do NOT use version II)
Directions:
· After traveling over the Bourne Bridge (southbound), take the 1st road, TROWBRIDGE RD, off the rotary to the right. Do NOT turn into the State Police barracks just before the right onto Trowbridge.
· Go 1.3 miles on Trowbridge Rd (which becomes Shore Rd).
· Turn right onto Bell Rd and go .2 miles.
· Continue straight onto Canal Service Rd (where Bell Rd goes left).
· Go past the lot on the right and bear left on the road along the canal.
· Go past the bathroom building to the parking lot.
Review the map below for driving directions:
Park in the lot on the far left if spots are available. If not, park in the lot next to the railroad bridge (on the right).

The Weather
The
forecast for Wednesday looks great! The Cape forecast is
calling for a
mostly
sunny day with temps in the low-70s. In a word, “perfecto!!!”.
The Ride
We’re very excited
about this route
because almost the entire ride provides views of the water. The route starts off with
a five-mile
down-and-back on Mashnee Rd, a causeway that takes us out to
Hog Island and
Mashnee Island in Buzzards Bay and provides great waters views
on both
sides. After that,
we’ll ride east along
the Cape Cod Canal to the end of the bike path.
Then we’ll travel 1/2 mile on the roads for takeout food from the highly rated Café Chew (click for menu). Feel free to bring your lunch if you prefer. We’ll have lunch on the beach and rocks overlooking Scusset Harbor in the Sandcatcher Recreation Area at the extreme eastern end of the Cape Cod Canal. After lunch, we’ll head over to The Shipwreck for ice cream before returning on the canal path.
Although the ride is fairly short and incredibly flat, winds along the canal can sometimes make these rides very challenging. The current forecast calls for very light winds but … you never know for sure.

Off the
Route
Our
“Off the Route”
feature often includes tidbits we’ve come across that we
think are worth
sharing. Please let
us know what you
think.
ABC
Burritos
On our last trip to Oscar’s
Burritos, the restaurant
was closed when we got there.
We’ll be trying
again in the next couple of weeks. To tide
you over until then, because burrito withdrawal (aka BW) can
inflict serious
emotional damage, we offer the following recipe:
INGREDIENTS
your choice of veggies (try
diced onions, diced mushrooms,
frozen peas, diced roasted red peppers (jar), diced avocado)
optional: handful of
raisins
1 can black beans (rinsed)
tortilla for roll-up (about 10” diameter)
For Sauce
tomato sauce (about ½ cup)
soy sauce (1 tbsp)
molasses (2 tbsp)
vinegar (1 tbsp)
spices (chili powder, smoked paprika, basil, cilantro, a few
red pepper flakes)
optional: ¼ cup
nutritional yeast (adds
a cheese-like flavor)
DIRECTIONS
saute veggies and black beans
make the sauce using all ingredients
add about ½ the sauce to the veggies and cook for a few more
minutes
warm the tortillas (toaster oven or microwave)
add the veggie/bean mixture to a tortilla shell and roll up
slice in half (on a diagonal) and move the two halves
side-by-side
add sauce on top
serve
Pickleball
is More
Popular than Pickles
Hula hoops, Pet Rocks, PacMan,
Beanie Babies …
it seems the US is totally fad crazy.
The latest madness is pickleball.
A number of ABC’ers have taken up the sport.
But not everyone is happy to welcome its arrival. Picklenoise is driving the neighbors crazy and new zoning laws are likely to be coming soon.

And pickleball isn’t the only new kid on the block. While pickleball has grown wildly in the US, something called “padel” is taking over in the rest of the world.

To recap Wednesday’s ride, we’ll meet at 10:30 a.m. in the Tidal Flats Recreation Area parking lot at 33 Canal Service Rd, Bourne, Ma. Remember, park in the lot on the LEFT if there are spots.
Make sure you check your email after 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday to make sure we didn’t postpone or cancel the ride and … don’t forget those helmets!!
See you on the Cape!
