The broadband situation is complicated, but one clear reason for the lack of progress is the state. MBI is a bureaucratic mess. But worse, the Baker administration put the brakes on everything so that towns have no certainty on how to proceed with any broadband implementation whether it be a standalone town-owned fiber network, wireless network, or WiredWest regional network.
That's particularly the case in Ashfield. We set aside $60,000 at the last town meeting, which could be used to start activities such as a pole mapping survey. But that's not going to happen until Ashfield knows for sure what the state's commitments are in matching funds and in-kind support.
