The workshop will be held at the AB Tech Small Business Center (SBC) at
the Enka campus on Tuesday nights from 5:30 to 8pm beginning May 21st
for 10 weeks. The SBC is located here:

A few more things to consider...
-What
you will need: this is a BYOL (bring your own laptop) workshop. You will
be installing Ruby and Rails on this laptop, and you will use it for
the entire 10 weeks. MAC and Linux operating systems are preferred.
Windows users will be configuring a Virtual Machine to work in the
appropriate environment.
-Come
ready to work: this is not a social gathering. Well, it is sort of...my
point is that this is a serious workshop for people interested in learning
Ruby on Rails. This does not mean we can't have fun. We will, but the
focus of this class is learning the fundamentals of Ruby on Rails. We
will plan something fun at the end of the workshop to celebrate.
-Time commitment: first, if you register for the workshop, then you are
agreeing to attend and participate for the entire 10 weeks. I
understand that things happen, and you might miss a night, but this is a
serious commitment, and I want you to take it as such. Additionally, I
would estimate an additional 3-5 hours per week of work outside the
workshop. If you are truly going to get anything out of this workshop,
you should be willing to put at least that much time into your work
outside of the workshop. Only attending once a week for a couple of hours
will not get you very far.
-There are no Ruby or Rails
prerequisites for this workshop, but you should be familiar with
general programming concepts such as variable assignment, if/else
structures and loops. It would also be helpful to learn some Ruby. You
can do that at
http://tryruby.org.
-Respect for others: I want this to be an open and
welcoming learning environment. We will be working as a group through
this workshop (myself included). Come ready to help and be helped. Be
respectful of others' space and individual skill levels.
-Structure of the workshop: We will use a course developed by Richard Schneems at UT Austin. Here is the class:
http://schneems.com/ut-rails.
Each week we will watch the videos for the class (about an hour). We
will then begin work on the homework for that week (about an hour). Some
may finish in class, others may need to continue work on their own
throughout the week.
If all of that floats your boat, go to
summerofrails.eventbrite.com
and register. I am limiting the number of registrants to 15 seats to
keep the group small, so if you are serious about attending sign up
ASAP. For other rails folks who are interested in helping out, I will contact you in a separate email.
