I’m going to do my best to provide a brief recap of this week’s 1000km Q&A for those unable to attend.
In attendance: Brian Leu, Matthew Palka, John Ellis, Charlie Hittinger, Luke Heller, Kevin Williams (California), Cynthia Van Der Wiele (Atlanta), and Joel Lawrence (California)
Introductions completed.
Please refer to the AIR website for a current thumbnail sketch of the route and ride plan here.
Since this meeting concluded, I have continued working on overnight services for the first night.
If you’re curious, you can watch my progress here.
Questions:
Will there be sufficient water/food through the first night?
Yes, see link above.
I am still dialing in service access. Rest assured, we won’t send you out there without a well-designed plan to meet your basic needs on the road.
Time allowance?
You have 75 hours for this event.
The start time is TENTATIVELY 8:00pm. If it changes, it would not be significant, max 2 hour in one direction or the other.
However, I expect that 8:00pm is a pretty safe bet.
This allows riders to finish by 11:00pm on the last day therefore allowing access to nearly a full Day 3.
Gravel? None.
Hotel? Clean and safe. Also, not top tier hotels that will break the bank. The Best Western in Shallote, NC is one that we’ve used in years past on prior brevets. The Econolodge in Cheraw was used on the 1000km in April.
I would describe this is the nicest and friendliest Econolodge I have ever been to!
Long night? Yes. It’s a long first night.
Do I have to ride 500km without stopping? No, stop whenever you want. Take a nap on a picnic table, indoors in a post office, or wherever suits you.
Can I find alternate hotels than what is being recommended? Yes, you can sleep wherever you want so long as you ride the prescribed course.
Like PBP, you are free to make your own lodging plans. This plan is laid out for you to reduce the brain work and we think it’s a good one.
Will it be hard to ride 500km before sleep? Yes, but we believe in you 😊 Nap as needed. Set an alarm for 15 minutes and then get back on your bike.
Initiating a sleep cycle and interrupting in shortly thereafter can be remarkably refreshing when you have a goal in mind such as just 100km to a hot meal, shower, and bed.
How much sleep will I get?
Everyone is different.
However, AIR has a reputation of riding together on these events and having a solid group support the herd.
If you find your way into a herd and can stay there, follow the flow.
Day 1 – 500km roughly
Day 2 – 250km roughly, very flat terrain
Day 3 – 250km roughly, the last 225km ha slightly and increasingly rolling terrain as you approach the finish
Recommended plan:
Day 1 – ride straight through, complete 500km within approx. 24 hours. Finish by 8pm, eat dinner and asleep by 9:30. [8 hours of sleep]
Day 2 – wake at 5:30, depart by 6am. Arrive for the SUNRISE at SUNSET BEACH! As a bench mark, plan to ride 20kph/12.5mph. Finish by 6:30pm.
We urge you to leave early on this day because Fiesta Tapatia closes at 10pm and is right across the street from the hotel. If you miss this restaurant, you’ll be eating dinner from a 24hour convenience store
Chances are, you’ll have lots of time on this night and have lots of time for sleep. Target sleep start: 8:30pm. [10 hours of sleep]
Day 3 – wake at 6:30, depart by 7:15am. Let’s slow the pace down to 18kph/11mph.
This would slow your finish time down to about 9:15pm.
There’s lots of movement in either direction for your preferences.
10 hours is a lot of sleep.
Should you choose to leave earlier ie: 5am, you’ll have 75km before you’re guaranteed to have good food svcs in Kershaw such as Bojangles.
Hurricane Season and weather?
It’s possible we’ll have rain.
It’s possible we’ll have a hurricane.
Our priorities are rider safety first and foremost. If we cannot do the ride safely, we will delay or cancel depending on riders wishes/needs.
We would not cancel the event outright without consulting with the riders.
We know some of you will be traveling great distances for the event and have made many accommodations.
Your success in completing this event is only secondary to your safety.
Drop bags and support?
None planned at this time.
We are not opposed to such support.
However, providing this level of support at our events would be prohibitive to our club offering the number of events that we do offer.
We are always open to volunteer support, where available.
We also believe there are times when having a follow car on the course can create the mental escape button encouraging a higher DNF rate.
How do I know if I’m making good time?
AIR uses EPP (electronic proof of passage) and no longer offer paper brevet cards.
Back in the day, all riders would receive a paper brevet card at the start and it would show control “CLOSING TIMES.”
When in doubt, always ensure you’re leaving a control by the indicated closing time to ensure you make it to the next control on time (before it closes).
This is intended only as a benchmark but can offer some support to ease rider’s anxiety about finishing on time.
The only time limit imposed now is the FINAL control closing time.
See the RUSA Control Time Calculator if you would like to use this as a resource.
Apparel / Schwag
We don’t offer schwag for this event.
Should a volunteer emerge to offer their time, we would happily entertain.
Event Name
The event has not yet been named and we would happily entertain suggestions.
Parking
I believe that overnight parking at the Gaffney Outlet will be approved.
However, I am working to verify.
If not, we will likely use the TA Travel Center at 175 Truck Stop Rd, Cowpens, SC 29330.
This is right off I-85 and nearby the Gaffney.
Airport Recommendation
Greenville Spartanburg (GSP) is recommended.
Getting an uber from there should be feasible to the ride start.
Shuttles
If you’re flying in, we’ll almost certainly shuttle you from GSP or AVL.
If you’re trying to fly into CLT, RDU, or GSO, contact us to coordinate.
