Dear All,

Asha Mumbai is conducting new innovative project in Asha Mumbai Center. Asha Mumbai arranged meeting of Asha Teachers and expert. Minutes of meeting are as Follows:

Attendees: Prof Shah, Dr. Smita, All Asha teachers, Digvijay

The agenda of the "Learning Hub" program is to provide a platform/context for the overall personality development of kids by guiding them to bring out their best creativity, their strengths and helping them out of their weaknesses gradually without giving right/wrong kind of feedback. Educating them through various activities that kindles their interests and teaches them through it. Kids should be groomed into working in collaborative environment where they freely open up, debate, discuss, share ideas and present their achievements with a sense of accomplishment. 
Teachers/mentors/guides to act as the facilitators and give them directions but the projects should be picked and carried out by kids themselves (as much as possible)

TODOs:

Co-ordinator: Digvijay
1. Upgrade the RAM of all machines to min 1 GB and one machine to 8 GB (or 4 ).
2. Upgrade the processor in two machines to 2.8GHz
3. Install Windows 7 OS on all machines where possible
4. Install Ubuntu OS (dual bootable along with windows) on all machines that will be used for learning hub
5. Install the necessary software (Logo, scratch etc) on all machines

Co-ordinator: Karuna/Smita/Vidya 
Need external professional expertise help
5. Set up the intranet (LAN) sharing the two broadband services with login/role based access
6. Configure the best possible security/protection

Co-ordinator: Karuna/Smita/Other teachers
7. Co-ordinate the time slots with IIT students who can lead/facilitate in afternoon batches
8. Vidya - to facilitate the morning batches of around 8-9 kids

9. Training the teachers on various activities that can be initiated as first step. 
I offer to have the first round of demo/discussion in the next week on any week day (will check with Karuna on the availability of all teachers in morning time) - I can demo the usage of google map API, wiki content creation, logo ( I have not seen NetLOGO, but MSWLogo, but can check on it), basic scratch (if required, all may already know). 
Other teachers can continue with the projects during my 2 week vacation (march 3rd - 14th)

10. Getting kids from other schools, organizing meeting with their parents etc

Had a discussion with around 10 volunteers from IIT+StXaviers yesterday. Very sorry that none ( NONE) of the teachers or organisers of ASHA could be present though it was a  much planned meeting .I will make a specific request to those interested  next time myself unless the coordinator (Ms Karuna in this case) has clear instructions to necessarily inform all concerned . I had not forgotten to specifically request her to send a mail to all attendees with a CC to me.

  1. Warning: The following is about to disrupt the quiet and smooth function of ASHA and I shall take the credit for it if it happens.Any collaborators!
  2. I explained to volunteers the purpose of the meeting as follows
    1. Background
      1. The objective of ASHA should not be to merely act as appendage of municipal school
      2. It is criminal to reenforce the notion in underprivileged children that that is all they deserve
      3. ASHA students learning should be an envy of even the best private schools in the area
      4. That there is a possiblity of raising the expectation of the children , particularly from themselves
      5. That technology provides this as opportunity
      6. and that Asha Powai has , more than any other perhaps the desire and resources and history of doing this.
      7. that this has to be taken further
      8. that proximity near IIT and hence availability of capable volunteers enjoins upon us the responsibility to take this lead
      9. That ASHA can provide support system for such a mission
      10. The 'Learning Hub' concept as propounded by Seymour Papert is guiding global thought that needs to be localized to the indian and powai context
      11. Ken Robinson's Changing Paradigm of Education is another corroboration.

    2. How technology and collaboration combined with compassion can change paradigm and DEEPEN learning
      1. that using technology we can create learning environments that can be very enchanting ( with 'Aha' factor) that can create the necessary motivation to even do the 'boring' tasks better
      2. The technology we choose should be designed for deeper learning which includes
        1. opportunity to converse among peers and with facilitators('teachers') to chisel the concepts through expressions in language (the concoction of hindi+marathi+english+?) of communication
        2. the conversation be supervised with an objective of facilitation to communicate and not 'right' or wrong'
        3. that projects be designed ( as far as possible self designed by learnners) in consultation
        4. The projects endup as public expressions ( to be put on the intranet ) and with choice to learner to put up on internet
        5. that peers evaluate ( Vidya is developing a format, moodle can be rigged up to do the same) and facilitators provide reasoned evaluation more as feed back
        6. Learners should get to choose project areas and counsellors advise how the mix of projects be chosen
        7. The breadth of choice be given due evaluation ( so that some areas say maths or biology or language or history) is not eliminated and some areas are not over-emphasized but still maintain roundedness
      3. Rather than 'date of manufacture' as the basis, the groups of learners should be mixed across age
      4. Reviews to make mid course corrections

      1. GoogleAPI : search and locate your home or Asha and create a program for google map ,use 'tryit' tutorial . Anyone above 7th standard and all teachers can do this. I will offer to demo.(wish some IITians can be motivated to help)
