The benefits and downsides of being a Top Dasher come down to your style of delivering and the unique challenges your area of delivery forces you to deal with. No matter what, though, gig economy workers like DoorDash drivers only benefit from learning about and taking advantage of as many tools and resources as possible.

I won't go into more detail here since the process is very straightforward. Like I said, most people I've spoken to went through the signup process but never went out on their first order because they had talked themselves out of being a DoorDash driver out of fear and confusion.

Some DoorDash drivers (by now you know they're called dashers but I'll just continue on with DoorDash driver) will take super low orders because they don't want their acceptance rate to go below 80%. That's such a trap and only benefits DoorDash.

I know drivers who go out on weekends and into the night and make $800 but I wouldn't expect more than $200 your first week since that's just your time to get oriented with the app and your area's restaurants, etc.

DoorDash now has the DasherDirect debit card you can sign up for once you're a dasher that circumvents having to pay a cashout fee and your money will be in your account right after each dash. You can read my pros and cons about DasherDirect, here.

Up until very recently, DoorDash had a rewards program called Top Dasher that allows dashers access to higher paying order if they reach Top Dasher. The requirements were pretty nuts and required you to take some crappy orders to reach Top Dasher.

I've seen the amount as high as $900 so if you're considering delivering for DoorDash, make sure you ask someone for a referral even if it's a random dasher you see at a restaurant; I'm sure they'd be happy to have that extra cash as well.

Another great tax deduction for Doordash drivers includes any hot bags, blankets or other gear you use for your deliveries. You know those insulated bags and blankets that you use to keep food orders nice and warm? Yep! They are deductible as a business expense.

Pay for your own health insurance? The cost of your health insurance premiums can be a tax deduction for Doordash drivers, or anyone who is self-employed, as long as you meet a few requirements. You can read more about the IRS requirements here.

In March 2020, I was laid off from my full-time job as a chef due to the coronavirus pandemic. While I was job searching on Craigslist, I kept coming across ads to be a delivery driver for DoorDash, so I thought "Why not?" and decided to apply.

Most of the bonuses and incentives we get are not worth it. If there's a $2 bonus pay, that will only make up for what people aren't tipping. DoorDash will routinely offer $2 bonus pay or other cash incentives to get more drivers out and working. Sometimes they'll offer a $50 bonus if I complete a certain number of orders in a specific timeframe. These incentives come and go all the time.

I have my own mask and my own hand sanitizer and disinfectants, but it would be nice if they sent us PPE so we didn't have to pay for it out of our own pockets. Also, even after two months of being a Dasher, in November 2020 I still hadn't received my delivery bag or space blanket. (Editor's note: DoorDash has offered hand sanitizer and gloves to drivers in some cities, as previously reported by Insider.)

Editor's note: In an email to Insider, DoorDash clarified that base pay is provided per order, not per hour, and ranges from $2 to over $10. DoorDash said that drivers also get 100% of tips, and on average "earn more than $22 per hour that they're on a job, including tips." They also referenced the upcoming $12 million Dasher rewards program, the details of which will be announced later this year. The company added that they offer two weeks of financial assistance to delivery workers who are diagnosed with COVID-19 or are subject to quarantine by local health officials, and said that PPE has been available to Dashers free of charge during the pandemic and can be reordered on a weekly basis.

DoorDash is the largest food delivery service in the United States. Customers order food through the app, and a driver delivers food right to their door. It can be a solid gig for those looking to make a little extra income. Think of it this way: over the course of your year, you actually end up spending a lot to be successful as a dasher. You might buy a phone mount, for example, or order some courier bags (that are nicer than the free one DoorDash gives you). These are both business expenses, so you can write them off on your taxes.

There are many other similar platforms to DoorDash you could consider - Apps such as Uber Eats, Deliveroo, SHIPT, Slice, and GrubHub all offer similar services. These also often hire freelance delivery drivers, with different jobs offering different rates.

There are two sets of constraints used to define dasher availability and routing preferences. The optimizer is run on several instances distributed based on regional boundaries multiple times a minute.

Since dispatching a dasher for an order is an essential component of our delivery product, switching over to the new optimization solution had to be done with zero downtime and no impact on the fulfillment quality. Typically, we run experiments for new functionality and measure the impact on quality metrics, but since optimization is such a fundamental part of the algorithm, an experiment is both higher risk and not granular enough to understand the change at the lowest level of detail. Fortunately, an initiative to refactor our codebase had finished up around the same time. One of the changes was to move the optimization code into a separate component behind an extensible interface, so we tried a different approach.
