**The Da Vinci “Code”**
As Freddi, Jodie, Fred, and Joe discover in “Breaking the
Codex,” Leonardo kept copious notes of his inventions,
ideas, and visions written in handwriting that could only
be read by reflecting it in a mirror. In this activity, students
will enjoy copying Leonardo’s special writing technique.
Instructions
1. Explain to students that they will try writing as Leonardo da
Vinci did in his notebooks. It is a mystery why he did it, but he used
“mirror writing” (writing backwards and across the page from
right to left) and wrote with his left hand. The best way to read
this type of writing is by holding a mirror up to it so the reflection
allows you to see the words correctly. Ask students to try writing
their letters backwards, from right to left, using their left hands.
2. Have them try writing the alphabet forward and backward.
3. Distribute mirrors or arrange a mirror station. Have students hold
up their backward writing and see if it looks normal.
4. Ask volunteers to write a backward message to a classmate and see
if he or she can read it with a mirror.
5. Discuss other writing systems that are not written and/or read
left to right. For instance, in Hebrew words and sentences are read
from right to left. Chinese writing is read from top to bottom
starting at the right hand side of the page.

**Leaning Tower of Pisa**
Here's what you'll need...
• Tp roll (or paper towel roll cut to fit)
• Gray or white paint
• Paint brush
• 10-12 white or gray pipe cleaners
• Wire cutters or sharp kitchen scissors
• Glue
• White napkin or paper towel
Here's how you make it...
1. Trim a little bit off on end of your tp roll. Cut it on an angle so
your tower will "lean". Paint it gray or white (we did ours gray).
2. Cut a bunch of pipe cleaners into 2 inch sections. Bend each
section to make an arch. We wrapped our around a pencil.
3. Glue a pipe cleaner around the top of your tower. Glue an arch
below it.
4. Continue gluing arches all the way around. Glue another strip of
pipe cleaner underneath. Glue another row of arches underneath.
5. Glue arches all the way down to the end of your tower, gluing
strips of pipe cleaner in between.
6. Fold and roll a napkin and place it inside to finish off your
Leaning Tower of Pisa!
Your napkin probably needs to be paper, a cloth one may be too heavy
and may tip over your tower!

**Giant Ice Cream Cone**
Here's what you'll need...
• Cardboard
• Paper plates
• Paint and brush
• Scissors
• Ruler
• Brown marker
• Glue
Here's how you make it...
1. Paint the tops of each paper plate the 'flavor' you'd like each
scoop on your cone. Dessert sized paper plates were used in the
picture, but use the size that will fit your cone.
2. While you're waiting for your scoops to dry, cut a triangle shape
from your cardboard. With your brown marker and ruler, draw lines on
your cone (you can omit this step if your doing this craft with young
children).
3. Cut cloud like ice cream shapes from your paper plates, and glue on
one top of each other on your cone.

**Mona Lisa**
Materials:
Pasta of different shapes and sizes
food coloring
Mona Lisa template
glue
alcohol
cardboard
Pasta dye Instructions:
1. Pour about 1/4 cup of alcohol and about 10 drops of food coloring
in a zip lock baggie and mix thoroughly.
2. Add 1 to 2 cups of pasta to the zip lock baggie and shake the
mixtures vigorously to completely cover the pasta with the alcohol and
food coloring mixture.
3. Let the pasta mixture sit for one hour and then turn the baggie
over and let it sit for another hour. You can let the pasta, alcohol,
and food coloring mixture sit for as long as it takes to get the
deepest color pasta you are looking for. If your pasta is not dark
enough then just repeat steps 1-3 until your pasta reaches the desired
shade of coloring you are looking for. The longer the pasta sits in
the alcohol and food coloring mixture, the deeper the color will get.
4. Once your pasta has reached the desired color, drain the pasta and
separate it into groups of like colors on a cookie sheet that has been
lined with newspaper or wax paper. Let the colored pasta dry
overnight. You can make your favorite homemade decorations after your
colored craft pasta has air dried overnight.
Mona Lisa Instructions:
Give each child a Mona Lisa template and a piece of cardboard.
Glue the Mona Lisa template to the cardboard.
Ask the children to decorate it with the colorful pasta
Let it dry over night
