This is what I think asemic poetry sounds like. Look for it to be released on  January 1st 2022.

What you have heard is true: I have always been part of the problem.
Over the years I have used the term asemic writing to refer to many different kinds of work. I've called some of my visual poems asemic writing. Some of what I probably should have called abstract art (or gestural abstraction) I have instead called asemic writing. And, very early in my engagement with the term, I used some of my quasi-calligraphic drawings as graphic scores and called them asemic writing.

This is from an email I sent to Tim Gaze in 1998 (written while drunk, and given here unedited):

i have been attempting to read some of my asemic works aloud. it's surprising what occurs. a sort of mutated letteral growl and hiss, recognizable letter sounds which segue in and out of asemic vocalizations. i have no interest at all in performance, but i may get around to making a tape at some point. but i need a little more practice before i'll be willing to do that. it's interesting, though, that i'm finding the asemic texts to be something other than silence. they lack signification, which is probably their strongest allure, but i think they are not lacking in sound.

(I never did get around to making a tape)

If you do get around to making a tape, I would like to publish it.

I used to write drunk too but I've been sober now for a year and a half.

Have you been listening to Tim's radio show?

I think asemic is the best word to come along since dada.

ANYTHING even vaguely textual can be read or performed aloud - Jim: you should make that tape - or WAV file these days, which is pretty easy to do on a small computer...

Thanks for the offer, Michael, but I don't think I'll ever get around to making a tape.

I haven't had so much as a beer in over 20 years, but I had my share when I was younger.

Someone should write a history of the relationships between drinking/drug use and the practice of asemic writing. Michaux, of course, his face would be on the cover. But take a look at Everything Lost by William Burroughs (pages 83 - 85...) and Indian Journals by Allen Ginsberg. Handwriting disintegrates into scribbling, drawing, maybe even desemantized writing. I think the research might uncover a lot of connections. It could be an interesting book.

Tim's show is great.

Asemic is better than Dada. Is better for you than Dada. And it tastes good too.

I like a lot the track from "Schizo Variations" ---I've just listened to it.
And am gonna play it again.

Please, Jim, consider Michael's offer.
Also, I'm posting in facebook your note "Take a look at Everything Lost by William Burroughs (pages 83 - 85...) and Indian Journals by Allen Ginsberg. Handwriting disintegrates into scribbling, drawing, maybe even desemantized writing. I think the research might uncover a lot of connections."

[On Dec. 19th, here in Rome, I'll give a lecture about "desemantized writing" & "asemic writing" seen in connection with several artists of the 20th century. It will be in Italian and won't be recorded. But sooner or later I'll made the first (English) version resurface.]

If any of you/us wanted to share (old or new) mp3 or wav files here, they're welcome.

(I remember an amazing performance by Geof Huth during the Bury Text Festival in 2011, sort of mesmerizing chant. Maybe born from an asemic script).

From my blank Friday, hi: all the best to you all
M

Thank you, John & Marco, for the encouragement, but 1998 was a long time ago. Maybe I should have recorded what I was doing then, but I don't feel very confident about re-enacting it now. We'll see what happens. You guys have me thinking about this again, and thinking about it is the first step on the slippery slope towards actually doing it.

And thanks also, Marco, for posting my little note on Facebook. Maybe someone out there is looking for a project...

Thanks for the support everyone!

I am looking to release more works by other sound poets If any one has an album in their hard drive.

Audio books of experimental poetry is something else i am interested in.

I bet you would make a great audiobook Laura.

I used Bandcamp and a computer microphone for the recordings.

Audacity is a great open source audio recording app that is free to download.

Will you publish the scores for your album, and for any other albums of sound poetry you might release? I know that would complicate things a bit, but it might be worth the effort. The writings/drawings/graphic scores/etc will be an important part of what you're doing. To make explicit the connections between asemic writing and sound poetry it might be necessary to package an album and booklet together. I don't know if you could do that at bandcamp, but you could probably do it at the Internet Archive.

I was actually just jamming with my voice, so no scores. The vocals on Dr. Dragon were done with effects added when i mixed the track.
I accidentally recorded the metronome in the background so i decided to keep it and tweek it into a percussive element.

There is a way to sell other things like vinyl records and T-shirts I might do a booklet in the future but for now it will stay as noisepo.

Oh, ok. That's interesting too. Asemic sound poetry doesn't need to be written at all, in any form. That is something to think about. Thanks.

interestingly, ive been making a lot of cut up technique things with a microcassette recorder.
the sounds and idiosyncrasies that is has
(if it isn't a human voice, the random sounds and jumpy style)
act as an interesting aural form to accompany the asemic visual

i love the style if Dr Dragon - it has something that is inconceivable and disconnects from other styles, much like microtonal music.

great! i've been making some cut-up vids over the years.
a recent one is here: https://youtu.be/id_pPl5Uc3Y (the language is actually italian, but the cuts "desemantize" the flow and reduce it to asemic units no italian listener may understand)
i'm definitely interested in this kind of experiments.
