Hello! 

ITECA would like to invite you to join us for our first fall tree planting volunteer event on Saturday, November 22! This event will begin at 10:30 am at the Love Albany Center, located at 8 Kate Street in Albany.  

This volunteer tree planting event is part of a larger climate change reforestation effort.  ITECA, UAlbany’s Institute for Transformational and Ecosystem-based Climate Adaptation, has partnered with Radix Ecological Sustainability Center, a local non-profit, to plant trees throughout disadvantaged communities in the City of Albany to help the community adapt to extreme heat and flood events. In the past year, members of ITECA’s Hudson-Mohawk Climate Corps (HMCC) have planted over 250 trees within the city. As part of this effort, ITECA hires and trains UAlbany undergraduate students during the summer to engage in tree planting, soil testing, ecological restoration, GIS mapping, and assisting with ITECA’s on-campus native tree nursery. 

At this event on November 22, we will be planting a variety of edible trees and shrubs, which will provide shade and cooling during the hot summer months as well as free food to people in the community. This planting site will soon be home to approximately 65 new trees, and we hope to plant about 20 of those on this date. Join us for an opportunity to make a difference by learning how to plant trees in the community and learning other ways to get involved in our programs! The tree planting event is open to all, so bring your friends! All supplies and tools will be provided, so just dress for the weather!
