Twelve boats have checked in so far for the June 3 Commodore Classic.
3 are cruising boats; 3 are cruiser/racer type boats, and 6 are racer/cruiser type boats.
Because a number of boats which are generally considered more racer than cruiser have taken interest in the event, the Organizing Committee with the concurrence of Principal Race Officer Denny Dwire has added an additional handicap adjustment factor. The race committee will be using the PHRF Performance Factor (times 12) to reduce handicaps of all boats.
Example: Wolfpack, a Catalina 320 with a peformance factor of 1.37 would have its overall rating reduced by 16 seconds. Endurance, with a performance factor of 2.64 would have its handicap reduced by 32 seconds (thus the cruising type boat Wolfpack would gain 16 seconds per mile against the racing type boat Endurance).
Last year Endurance beat Wolfpack by 6 minutes, 27 seconds on corrected time in an 11-mile race. Has the performance factor been in effect, Endurance would still have beaten Wolfpack, but only by 3 minutes, 31 seconds.
Per the sailing instructions, this change will be posted by Dwire.
The amended notice of race and entry form are attached.
