And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. Luke 8:43-44.
Meditation:
The woman suffered for 12 years and, according to the other Gospels, she expended all of her resources searching for her healing. She seemed to be at the end of the rope, and no one could fault her if she despaired. But she did not give up, and even tried the craziest things, such as touching a man's cloak believing it would heal her. Well it turns out this crazy belief led her to Jesus, and thereby her healing. It is a miracle that the woman was healed by merely touching Jesus's cloak, but just as miraculous is that she did not give up. There were 12 long and pain-filled years leading up to that moment, which could have (understandably) broken her further and left her unbelieving and bitter, but she did not give up. She continued believing and searching for healing. Similarly to the woman, this has been a long and pain-filled year for many of us, where it seems that we have hopped from sadness to tragedy to heartbreak, and back again. If we are honest, sometimes we want to give up searching for God's miracle in the middle of all this. But again, similarly to the woman, while we are searching for God's miracle, we have to be our own miracle in that we do not give up. Because, again similarly to the woman, our endurance in searching for God's miracle may lead us to the exact place, moment, situation where God will perform His miracle for us.
Prayer:
You are the miraculous God. You are a provider, a healer, a way maker, the answer. I love you for the mercy and grace you have shown me on this journey of life. Lord I thank you and I praise you for all you have done, you are doing, and will do. Help me, with the power of the Holy Spirit, to be my own miracle by providing me the endurance to keep going to, to keep searching for, to keep believing for the miracle only you can provide. In Jesus name, Amen.
