Hi there,

One of my clients require a desktop based feedreader, would this be an
appropriate tool to used with Flash CS 9? I have two options (the
bulk of the functionality will go into the Flash component):

a) using Adobe AIR and Flash
b) using C# and Flash

My preferred solution would be the AIR/Flash combo, but client
dislikes the AIR runtime download (go figure).

Any ideas?

thanks,

Johan

AIR is really a way to go because of these:-

1) File/LocalStorage API - Good for caching
2) Better HTTP API - More HTTP Header support, you can just make HTTP HEAD request various timestamps and ETag stuff. Which very much required to check if feed is updated or not..
3) HTML Control - You can show feed content without parsing it to show within Flash TextField, you can instead show it in HTML Control
4) Better web-integration and auto-update
5) Adobe has capabilities to make sure of better AIR penetration, believe me, we would see it on most of desktops soon...People do trust Adobe...
6) Better Windowing API to customize it give brand look and feel...
8) You can have web and AIR version, both of them can synchronize..

Lots of things in favour :)

Abdul,

Thanks for the reply ...

Sure, I agree with all of those.

I'm going to develop most of this in Flash (Actionscript 3.0), will
then use C# and AIR to provide the desktop functionality (local file
storage, branding, etc) with.

The client will eventually see the light, I hope!
