Inconsistent number of entries in returned xml

I have found what I "think" is a bug in the API.  Either that or I am doing something unsupported/stupid.  Anyway when I do a custom search such as this one:

http://export.arxiv.org/api/query?search_query=lastUpdatedDate:[199008010001+TO+null]+AND+ti:%22Exciton%22&id_list=&sortBy=lastUpdatedDate&sortOrder=descending&start=0&max_results=30

I find that the API returns inconsistent number of entries: "<entry>"

The header of the returned xml always says the file should contain 0 to 30 of 1174 results, but frequently (like every 3rd or 4th time) the file only contains 1 or 10 actual entries 

I can reproduce this by simply using wget on the command line.

Hi Jack,

it's a bug with repeated identical queries (essentially a race
condition in the caching) which we are aware of. I don't have a
timeline for when this will be fixed, however.
