oai vs. api?

I just spent the morning reading up on OAI and it seems like a great
method for harvesting metadata, especially because once I built up
tools for harvesting arxiv I could easily reuse these tools for other
repositories. However, it seems like the results from the API return
much more useful, like document links, DOIs, affiliations, etc.

My question is this, what are the advantages and disadvantages of
using OAI vs the API? (and does arXiv have a preference as to which I
use for harvesting?)

Hi Mike,

did you check the available metadata formats

http://export.arxiv.org/oai2?verb=ListMetadataFormats

You can get all the metadata we have for a given item via OAI by using
a arXiv native metadataPrefix instead of the simple oai_dc. There is
no additional metadata available via API
