The Moline-based airport is pursuing a feasibility study to determine whether its location, infrastructure and surrounding area could support a spaceport licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Leischner anticipates any future spaceport in the Quad-Cities would be a horizontal launch site, with aircraft using the airport's 10,000-foot runway. But concepts abound for what the future of spacecraft could look like in the coming decades, Leischner said.

On a tour of the airport Monday, Rep. Eric Sorensen, D-Ill., who is the ranking member of the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, said he was "so excited that the Quad Cities International Airport is putting themselves forward as a potential for a spaceport."

The U.S., through a multi-phased mission called Artemis, aims to return astronauts to the moon for the first time in more than 50 years. The eventual goal is to build a long-term presence on the moon to launch further space exploration missions and send astronauts to Mars for the first time.

"As we go back to the moon with the Artemis mission, we've got to understand that there's an opportunity there for us to move not only science, but some industry, into space, into orbit," Sorensen said. "And in order for us to be able to do that, we're going to have to have a place where you can have an aircraft take off and actually get to the outer parts of the atmosphere. So that's what we're talking about here."

Sorensen pointed to Collins Aerospace in Rockford, Illinois, which is making engine parts for NASA's Artemis mission. With the country's goal to make it to Mars from the moon, Sorensen said rocket parts will have to be transported there somehow.

"The FAA has been very adamant about this isn't for everybody," Leischner said. They're going to limit how many licenses go out for commercial spaceports. So we want to bring those future jobs and that future economic boon to our community, but also the state of Illinois."

Points for the Quad-Cities include less air traffic and more unused space than in busier airports like Chicago or Minneapolis, Leischner said, while still being located relatively close to those population centers.

"Planes would use the existing ten thousand foot runway that the airport has, they would take off just like a regular commercial aircraft would, however they would have a different system that they'd switch on, a different fueling mechanism, that would allow them to travel into space."

"Within the next five years, we're going to be doing major terminal renovations at the airport," she said. "Even though we're looking at a spaceport planning study, that in no way impacts the way that we're going after air service."
