I finally managed to solve it with a firmware update on the hilscher unit, i was using an old NL-150 unit that i normally use for programming siemens PLC and the firmware was from v2.00 and way back from 2009. The minute i updated the firmware it connected and started working. Apparently V2.00 only supports PLC programming ???

Its relatively simple to update / identify the firmware. You need to have the latest version of the S7 IBHnet configuration tool, i think you are already using this for configuring the unit for programming.
Once connected to the configuration tool, it will show the current version and allow to update the firmware.

I got the latest IBHnet config tool, updated the firmware (was on 2.00) and it just worked then with no further changes. Thanks for the tips.
Does this mean I need to disconnect Ignition if I need to make program changes ?

One of the most important and common tasks as you received a new PLC is a firmware update. When it comes to Siemens PLCs in the S7-1200 and S7-1500 families, you can use TIA Portal to push the firmware update to the device.

Once you've run a firmware update, you'll be able to see the status of the upgrade. Once that is done, the new PLC firmware will be loaded on the PLC. It's important to note that TIA Portal will automatically update the PLC to the correct version within the project. In other words, if you had added a V4.4 PLC and performed an update to V4.6, you won't need to change the device.

Mine says RCU v2.2 (lucky me) and works fine for telephony (with siemens gigaset bluetooth SL785 cordless landline, htc desire mobile, dell laptop with linux phone software). I love it - its made a huge difference for me.

I feel it to be a major shortcomming for a device that costs twice that of many smart cellphones and can not have the firmware updated. I also wish they made them so that they were rechargable from a standard cell phone charger and they need to make a car charger. The battery voltage is the same and the plug is the same one that my Blackberry uses but it will not charge from it.

Security researchers have disclosed multiple architectural vulnerabilities in Siemens SIMATIC and SIPLUS S7-1500 programmable logic controllers (PLCs) that could be exploited by a malicious actor to stealthily install firmware on affected devices and take control of them.

Put differently, the weaknesses are the result of a lack of asymmetric signature verifications for firmware at bootup, effectively permitting the attacker to load tainted bootloader and firmware in a manner that undermines integrity protections.

A more severe consequence of loading such modified firmware is that it could give the threat actor the ability to persistently execute malicious code and gain total control of the devices without raising any red flags.

The lack of a firmware update is attributed to the fact that the cryptographic scheme that undergirds the protected boot features is baked into a dedicated physical secure element chip (called the ATECC108 CryptoAuthentication coprocessor), which decrypts the firmware in memory during startup.

An attacker with physical access to the device could therefore leverage the issues identified in the cryptographic implementation to decrypt the firmware, make unauthorized changes, and flash the trojanized firmware onto the PLC either physically or by exploiting a known remote code execution flaw.

It seems logical that one could just copy or image the existing SD card (4MB is what we have now) to a larger standard one, but of course that didn't work. Is there, like, a firmware that Siemens preloads their cards with to deal with this?

Welcome to our product applications area.
Please select the application for which you wish to download the latest firmware update. Please note, the applications will only execute if you have bought the appropriate product or service from us.

For the Espresso project, Matica Technologies also used Teamcenter for firmware management, tracing the software versions installed in each machine, and to manage the electronic designs from dedicated CAD software.
