When you compare data with this program, it displays two folder lists with detailed color-coding. It simply indicates if the analyzed file types are available in a single folder, both folders, or if both files are completely different. The file organizer uses a range of color codes for other statuses. Thus, it becomes easier to identify issues, the same file types, and changes made to the database.

Beyond Compare lets you easily and quickly compare data in folders and files on your PC. The file organizer uses powerful yet simple commands to focus on the various differences in the data. It lets you synchronize the files, compare data, merge all the required changes, and generate a wide range of reports for record-keeping.

Beyond Compare is a powerful time-saving utility for comparing files and folders on your Windows system. Use it to manage source code, keep folders in sync, compare program output, and validate copies of your data.

Beyond Compare can create a snapshot of a live directory structure, and compare it against the live copy at a later date. The utility helps you analyze differences in detail and carefully reconcile them. It commands a wide range of file and text operations, as well as script commands for automating tasks.

  • Make use of the ultra-handy right-click explorer file and folder context menus to compare stuff.
  • The default comparison is file size plus date and time, which is super speedy but not always accurate. Use the little scales icon (or the Session Comparison Control menu) to switch the comparison type to Size and CRC.
  • When viewing a file comparison, use the referee icon (or the Tools Edit Current Rules menu) to tweak the file comparison rules. I usually turn off all the options under "Unimportant Text" such as leading whitespace, case, line endings, etcetera.

I really like this button but there are times I would like to use a different compare tool. To achieve this I have taken the great work you both (AB and Leo) have done, and generalised it so it can be applied to other compare tools.
I put it in a different post External compare tool buttons. It currently supports 15 different compare tools.

This script is super seeded by the external compare and merge tools script. I believe that script supports everything this one does (it was the starting point), as well as some other features, including supporting other tools.

This is cool! I use Beyond Compare at work. However, and in life there is always a however. I've found Beyond Compare doesn't support compares of the .docx, .xlsx etc.. formats. I had to got to using the plugin for WinMerge for this.

It should sort-of work but isn't really designed for context menus. However the command is run, it will always look at the selected files/folders on each side and compare those, not the right-clicked file(s). In many cases those are the same things but not always.

The base tool itself is great, but I was really thrilled when I followed the link on the Download page to Additional file format downloads for version 3. There I found something I've been looking for years...and in fact a while ago had written a plug-in for BC2 to do...the ability to compare Tidied XML.

Several of our mutual customers have reported Malwarebytes Premium detecting Beyond Compare 4.2's executable "c:\program files\beyond compare 4\bcompare.exe" as Malware.Ransom.Agent.Generic. I tested a trial version of Malwarebytes on a Windows 10 virtual machine but I've been unable to duplicate the false positive.

I was not able to reproduce your issue, can you provide more details on the exact steps you are taking?
Also can you paste in a screen shot of the external compare tools settings.
What version of BC are you using?

BC version is 3.2.4 build 13298. I used the default t hat gets populeted when BC is selected and fixed the path to the executable.
I am initiating this from pending changes.
If I say "use a external tool as default compare", and do a compare from the history tab, it opens a session in BC and both files have the error.

I don't have an answer but here is some of the stuff I found:
The temporary file and directory are created when the compare is attempted.
It also deletes both the file and directory when you close BC.
So be sure that BC is still open when you check to see if the directory exists in temp.

Try creating a file or directory manually in the temp directory to make sure you have the right permissions.

It uses the USER tmp variable for the temp file location.
Interestingly if I set my tmp variable to a folder that is read only I get an error before BC even opens.

I just got it working and also reproduced it again.
If BC is already open with a compare session, it adds a session and has the error.
If BC is NOT open it starts it and the compare displays just fine.
I think that that is a bug, but for now I can work around it.
It would be good to know whether you can reproduce it or whether it is something funky in our company BC install.
Thanks for digging in and providing me with the details that made me find it.

I've solved this problem for me by calling Uwe Raabe's Project Magician (Dproj Normalizer for older versions) as an input filter in beyond compare. Not quite as simple as it could be, because it overwrites the input file, but with a little bit of my own magic aka InplaceExeWrapper this works fine.

Like many self-proclaimed computer geeks, over the years I have collected a lot of various utilities that perform specific actions that I need to take care of. Sometimes I discover these tools when Binging my way through the Internet, and other times they come highly recommended from other people. In this specific situation, Beyond Compare falls into the latter category - dozens of people had recommended Beyond Compare to me before I tried it out, and after falling in love with it I have recommended it to dozens of my friends. At the time I was using Microsoft WinDiff to compare files, which is still a great application to do simple comparisons, but Beyond Compare does so much more.

Beyond Compare is a simple utility that allows users to quickly and easily compare their files and folders.

It allows to view the differences between files or folders compared using several methods of comparison such as CRC check, comparison of text, data, versions, MP3 comparison, image and hexadecimal comparison, file attributes, binary comparison, MP3 comparison, and others. It displays items compared side by side or above and below components and highlights their differences.

Text files can be edited with the integrated editor and it is possible to determine specific rules for documents, source code and HTML files.

Beyond Compare allows to upgrade the files, synchronize directories, check the copies of data, or to analyze the differences of the source code files and finally generate reports of recordings.
