Netflix, the TV show and movie streaming service that has been taking on regular broadcasters in originating and showing new content, has announced that it will be the exclusive home for the second half of the fifth season of Breaking Bad.

The conclusion to one of the most talked about TV shows in the last decade is in the can and soon to be broadcast in the States. The final eight episodes will start on 11 August on AMC in a traditional broadcast slot, but the UK and Ireland rights have been snapped up by Netflix, so it will be available on demand in the two countries from 12 August.

"Netflix has been instrumental in making Breaking Bad the success that it is - particularly in the UK and Ireland, where it has built an audience and become a huge phenomenon," said the show's creator Vince Gilligan.

All series of Breaking Bad - up to the end of the first half of season five - are available on Netflix. You could just about cram them all in by 12 August if you go some. Alternatively, AMC put together a trailer for the recent Comic-Con in San Diego that blitzed through all the previous series in just over two-and-a-half minutes. Warning though, it is full of spoilers if you haven't seen the show before.

Lucifer returned to Netflix with the first half of the super-sized Season 5 to introduce Lucifer's dastardly twin brother Michael, hook Lucifer and Chloe up, deliver a twist for Charlie, and turn Lucifer and Dan into bracelet bros within the span of eight episodes, but one of the biggest arcs centered on Mazikeen. Poor Maze was already dealing with a lot to start thanks to Eve leaving her and Lucifer returning to Hell without her, and things only got worse as the episodes passed. The end result was Maze siding with Michael, but Lucifer was arguably the one who betrayed her first.

Maze was furious with Lucifer for going home to Hell without her, and her efforts to deal with that betrayal on top of losing Eve weren't working too well. She was willing to help Lucifer, especially with Chloe, but her trust was shaken, and the situation wasn't helped when she learned that her mother had been on Earth for decades, and Lucifer knew but never told her. Throw in how dismissively Lucifer treated Maze's earnest desire for a soul, and I can't say that I blame her for losing some of her loyalty.

It undoubtedly didn't help that Lilith died shortly after Maze met her, and her one brief interaction with her mom didn't go well. Maze will never get closure, she might never get a soul of her own, and she might never get another chance with Eve. Siding with Michael over Lucifer may not have been a move that Lucifer fans will be too happy about, but Maze's switch was definitely provoked.

It also allowed for a pretty badass fight between Lucifer, Michael, Maze, and Amenadiel that could only be resolved by the timely arrival of God, so it's all for the best, right? In all seriousness, Maze was suffering on the side while her friends focused on their own problems, with even Linda not able to spend as much time with her as Maze hoped. That said, Linda had some helpful insight for Maze, and Maze's new outlook suggests that she'll approach things differently as the show continues. Lesley-Ann Brandt elaborated:

Well, I think it's safe to say that Maze will definitely be a consideration for Lucifer after she sided with Michael in the midseason finale, although a lot depends on what God has to say to his misbehaving sons and Maze. Lesley-Ann Brandt explained that Maze "absolutely" has some respect for God (24's Dennis Haysbert) and teased a "great scene" between Maze and God in the second half of Season 5 that will reveal her "demon face."

Despite Maze taking a stand for herself, Lucifer still might consider his relationship with Chloe to be the higher priority, especially when Michael still might be a celestial threat. Lucifer has consistently taken Maze for granted, and the two have also physically fought in the past, so I find myself wondering if he really understands how wronged she feels and that she might not just come around this time.

Unfortunately, viewers will have to wait for the second half of Season 5 on Netflix to learn how Maze will continue to handle Lucifer's betrayal and whether or not everybody's favorite demon will successfully get herself a soul. Netflix hasn't announced a premiere date for the next batch of episodes, but fans can at least count on Lucifer returning for a sixth season on top of what remains of the fifth.

For now, you can catch the first four and a half seasons streaming on Netflix, among the many other 2020 releases on the streaming giant. For some additional viewing options now and in the coming weeks, check out our 2020 fall TV premiere schedule.

One particularly uncomfortable episode will see the 1989 'Camillagate' tapes released, which in 1993 exposed an intimate phone conversation between Charles and Camilla when he said he wanted to be her tampon.

After they had separated, the 54-minute Panorama episode saw Diana detail her husband's affair, the one she had with Army officer James Hewitt, as well as struggles with her mental health and eating disorders.

A 2021 report by Lord Dyson concluded that Mr Bashir "seriously breached" guidelines by faking bank statements to gain access to Diana's brother Lord Spencer, in turn convincing her to do the interview.

Prince William and Prince Harry issued statements condemning the broadcaster, saying: "It brings indescribable sadness to know that the BBC's failures contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation that I remember from those final years with her."

In the run-up to the premiere, The Mail on Sunday reported that season five includes Prince Charles having a conversation with then-Prime Minister Sir John Major about the possibility of succeeding his mother as monarch.

"The time has come for Netflix to reconsider - for the sake of a family and a nation so recently bereaved, as a mark of respect to a sovereign who served her people so dutifully for 70 years, and to preserve its reputation in the eyes of its British subscribers," she said.

Netflix was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph as a DVD-by-mail service. The idea came after Hastings was charged a late fee for a movie rental. Customers could subscribe to receive DVDs by mail. The company later expanded to streaming and now has millions of subscribers.

The company at the time struggled with two fundamental problems in their business model. One was that because the DVD was sent via mail, it would take anything between one day to 4 days for the shipment to reach the subscriber. Even though people were likely to try Netflix, conversion to repeat rentals was low. Secondly, people would far more inclined to rent out the latest releases. For the company to break even on the cost of purchasing a DVD to rent-out, they would have to generate 15-20 rentals for each DVD.

Secondly, to enable maximum utilisation of their DVD content catalogue, the company created their movie recommendation system. Through Cinematch, Netflix would recommend shows for their subscribers to watch. The point for this was to alleviate pressure for DVD rentals away from new releases, to a more uniform renting out of their content library. This solution has over the years become considerably sophisticated, and drives how customers experience Netflix and how the company makes decisions when acquiring new content.

Netflix put further pressure on competition when they announced the launch of their streaming service in January 2007, as Watch Now. At the time the streaming service was expected to be of use only for power users with broadband internet connections, which were not all that common at the time. Users were required to have a 1 mbps internet connection to be able to stream movies, with a 3mbps connection required for streaming DVD-quality films. Subscribers under the $17.99 plan had access to 18 hours of streaming content. Video delivery was through a special browser applet that subscribers would have to install. By 2008 however Netflix had given access to unlimited video streaming for subscribers to its biggest plan .

Prioritising building a robust technical infrastructure has helped Netflix keep their first-mover advantage. Oftentimes the first-mover advantage is squandered by technology companies who have to make way for businesses that solve the problem more efficiently. Netflix, however, by relying on a solid content and technical team, has managed to keep its competitive advantage since the launch of its streaming video service.

As the company started working towards building a streaming video solution, they also started to develop solutions for streaming video through hardware platforms. In 2004/05 the company was considering working with contract manufacturers on DVD disc drives with a video processor, which could download video content over the internet, and then stream it on TV. This model was similar to TiVo, which enabled TV owners to record TV shows on a disc. This was however shelved as competition with Blockbuster intensified and Netflix had to put resources into engaging in a pricing war with the market leader.
