Dear Arts for Autism Committee,

I wanted to let you all know that thanks to the support of the ASNV community and my Guardian Angel Sarah Peterson, little Sebastian Mechlin today met his new nursing assistant Lisa.  Lisa is part of the EDCD state agency system. She will be working with my family as full-time as a carer for Sebastian.

If it hadn't been for Sarah's coaching, encouragement and loving devotion to the true mission that ASNV is all about,  this never wouldn't have happened!!!! Last year, I was told twice by Medicaid and the EDCD waiver folks that Sebastian did not qualify for assistance. Even though Seb was having daily seizures and passing out in random locations (at Giant, the car, in school, in the middle of the road, at Tysons Corner Mall), no one heard  us!!  No one except Sarah.  She helped me build a case to demonstrate to the government drones of the county that Seb did indeed qualify.  Completely!

And now I am happy to report - a year later -  that Sebastian is registered on Medicaid - under the long-term care category. This means that no matter what happens to anyone else in his family, Sebastian will not be ignored. He now has a one-to-one in home nurse to help manage his health and well being.  Now our little guy can just be his happy, gentle self and be able to live life safer and with far less tension around him. He can just be a boy. And our time with him will be so much more enjoyable.

Meanwhile, the rest of my family, is keenly aware that our lives are about to completely change for the better.  Four year old Steffie will finally see what it's like to have outings with her parents, regular kid activities and all the things mainstream children get to experience, without the constant limitations and interruptions she has experienced thus far. Although it might take him awhile, 18 year old Maximilian will get used to not having to play the role of third parent to his little brother - Max matured faster than we would have liked because he always felt responsible for joining the adults in the responsibility of caring for a special needs member of the family. It is our hope that Max will soon learn to let ago a little and concentrate instead on just being a young adult and new college student. And of course, Robert and I are beginning to exhale a bit, at the prospect of being more relaxed as a couple and more focused parents.  We have been living in a state of emergency and high tension for so long now, that we can only wonder what it will look like to stop waiting for the other shoe to drop, every second, and just starting LIVING!

I just need a bit of time to get grounded with this enormous life change- but please know that I really want to be part of Arts for Autism this year, in some way - not sure how just yet.

God Bless You All ! I look forward to seeing all of you soon.

Kindest Regards,

Vix Mechlin

Victoria,

I am so happy for you.  Thank you for your kind words, though I think you deserve most of the credit.  It was your persistence and perseverance that got Sebastian the help that he needs.  Good luck with your new nurse!  I'm glad you'll be joining us again for Arts, but I'm mostly overjoyed that you are going to have some help on a regular basis and that you and the other members of your family can find ways to meet your own needs instead of being constantly on the edge of emergency.  Congratulations!  Thank you! and sending *BIG HUGS*!  I am so happy for you.

Best,
Sarah
