PacRep Theatre to re-establish historic
CARMEL FOLLIES as major fundraising event
July 6, 2009
PacRep Theatre, the only professional theatre in Monterey County, is re-establishing the historic Carmel Follies (1925) as the company’s 2009 summer fundraising gala, July 31 at the Golden Bough Theatre beginning at 6:30pm. Written and directed by Walt DeFaria, the Carmel Follies is billed as an “outrageous tribute to Musical Theatre” and will feature over 30 of the Peninsula’s own “Movers and Shakers” including the PacRep Board of Directors, Homescapes Carmel owner Thompson Lange Monterey County Herald Editor Joe Livernois, Community Foundation For Monterey County CEO Todd Lueders, Assistant District Attorney Stephanie Hulsey, Monterey County Symphony’s Director of Operations Peter Tuff, Monterey Peninsula Airport Director Mary Ann Leffel, former Carmel Mayor Ken White, as well as professional actors and singers including Myles Williams, Lydia Lyons, Michael D Jacobs, Nancy Williams, Gracie Poletti and Layne Littlepage. The event includes fine wines, light hors d’oeuvres and delectable desserts, and PacRep’s famous “Fantasy Auctions” featuring a 10-day Holland America Cruise, as well as travel getaways, hosted dinners, and more. Proceeds from the event will benefit PacRep’s ongoing artistic and educational programs.
The historic Carmel Follies, presented in 1925, featured such Peninsula luminaries as Jo Mora, Ted Kuster, and George Ball, and was staged at the original Theatre of the Golden Bough, which burned down in 1935 after a production of “By Candlelight”. Proceeds from the 1925 Follies went towards the purchase of the Carmel Abalone League Baseball Grounds, which were located 2 blocks east of Serra’s Statue in what is now Carmel Woods. At the time, the Abalone League was the owner/operator of the Carmel Arts & Crafts Theatre on Monte Verde St, now the site of the aging Golden Bough Playhouse, which PacRep hopes to renovate as early as next year.
The 2009 Carmel Follies will be written and directed by Walt DeFaria. DeFaria directed such hit PacRep productions as “Peter Pan” and “Beauty and the Beast”, and wrote and directed numerous children’s musicals presented at the Golden Bough over the last 12 years. Musical Director is Stephen Tosh, with choreography by Gloria Elber and Reed Scott.
Admission to PacRep’s Carmel Follies is $75 per person for general seating, and $100 for VIP Premium Seating that includes preferred seats, personal wait staff during the event, and special VIP gifts. An optional Pre-Follies dinner at Kurt’s Chop House is offered for $50 per person, including a gourmet 3-course dinner, wine, tax, tip and limousine ride between the theatre and restaurant. Proceeds benefit the Pacific Repertory Theatre. Tickets are available at 831-622-0100 or online at www.pacrep.org.
PacRep is supported by ticket sales, individual donations, business sponsorships, and grants from The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Monterey Peninsula Foundation, The Shubert Foundation, The Dunspaugh-Dalton Foundation, The Chapman Foundation, The Berkshire Foundation, and The James Irvine Foundation, among others. Upcoming productions include the award-winning family musical, Oliver!, Aug 13 – Sept 27 at the outdoor Forest Theater; “Hamlet”, Sept 4 – Oct 18 at the Circle Theatre; and “As You Like It”, Oct 2 – Oct 18 at the outdoor Forest Theater.
