PacRep Announces the 2009 Carmel Shake-spear Festival

August 2009, Carmel, California Pacific Repertory Theatre, the regions only year-round professional theatre, is proud to announce the 20th Annual Carmel Shake–speare Festival, September 4th through October 18 at the Circle Theatre and the Outdoor Forest Theater in Carmel. Under the direction of Artistic Director Kenneth Kelleher, this year’s festival opens with Shake-speare’s renowned tragedy, Hamlet, in repertory with the romantic comedy, As You Like It.

Hamlet, the treacherous tale of murder, revenge and corruption, begins September 4 in the intimate Circle Theatre. An undisputed masterpiece of world theatre, Hamlet, Shakespeare’s great tragedy of passion and intrigue, has captivated audiences for over 400 years and remains as relevant as ever.

Hamlet features Equity actors Nicholas Pelczar as ‘Hamlet’, Chris Ayles as ‘Polonius’ and Emily Jordan as ‘Guildenstern’, PacRep resident actress Julie Hughett as ‘Gertrude’, returning guest actors Jeffrey Heyer as the ‘Player King’ and Stephen Massott as ‘Claudius’, and Maggie Mason as ‘Ophelia’, William Brown as ‘Rosencrantz’ and Theo Black as ‘Laertes’.

Hamlet begins with a discount preview on Friday, September 4 at 7:30pm, and opens Saturday, September 5, at 7:30pm, followed by a 2:00pm matinee on Sunday, Sept. 6. Performances continue Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, and Sundays at 2:00pm, through September 26, with additional evening shows at 7:30pm on Thursdays, October 8 and 15.  Additional matinees run Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18, all at 2:00pm.  Performances are in the Circle Theatre of the Golden Bough, Casanova St. between 8th and 9th, Carmel.

Playing in repertory with Hamlet, and continuing a 99-year tradition of Shake-speare at the outdoor Forest Theater, PacRep presents the bard’s romantic comedy, As You Like It, beginning October 2.  Artistic Director Kenneth Keller directs this audience favorite that features a courtship with a twist, a duke and his merry men in exile, a melancholic wit, a clown, and a lovesick shepherd and the shepherdess who spurns him. They all swirl together in a wildly romantic romp through the magical Forest of Arden where… "all the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players..." —  players who bring to life some of the most romantic and charming scenes ever written. As You Like It features repertory actors Theo Black as ‘Orlando’, Emily Jordan as ‘Rosalind’, Chris Ayles as ‘Touchstone’ and Stephen Massott as ‘Jacques’.

As You Like It starts with one discount preview, Friday, October 2 at 7:30pm, and opens Saturday, October 3 at 7:30pm, followed by a 7:30pm performance on Sunday, October 4.  Performances continue Fridays through Sundays through October 18 at 7:30pm. All performances are at the Outdoor Forest Theater, located at the corner of Mountain View and Santa Rita Street, in Carmel.

Tickets are available online at www.pacrep.org, in person at the Golden Bough Box-office, Monte Verde between 8th & 9th, Carmel, or by phone at 831-622-0100.
