Donating blood offers several benefits.  To name a few :

·         Firstly, the human element, it saves the life of one and brings happiness to many people associated with that one life.  The satisfaction you feel cannot be explained in words.

·         Activates the bone marrow to produce fresh blood cells and rejuvenate red blood cells

·         Activates heart muscles and circulation.

·         Regular donors have reduced risk of heart attack and stroke, as it reduces blood pressure and the level of cholesterol

·         Enables the donor to find out if they have any abnormalities in blood elements and certain diseases

A healthy person can donate blood once every three or four months.

Would  appreciate if you could confirm your participation as soon as possible.

IMPORTANCE OF BLOOD DONATION & WHY SHOULD WE DONATE BLOOD?

Blood transfusions save countless lives everyday. Blood is a critical part of everyday medical care such as major surgeries & other medical
procedures. Organ transplants, cancer therapy, heart surgery, and
treatment for anemia, support for patients with blood disorders are a few examples of medical procedures requiring blood transfusions.

Lot of research has been done & yet there are no substitutes for human
blood. The human body is the only manufacturer of this precious fluid,
which is rightly called THE LIQUID OF LIFE. All the money in the world is of no use if the right type of blood is not available in an emergency  or when needed for surgery. The only source of blood is the volunteers, who donate their blood & save lives.

Accidents can happen to anybody. One day our loved ones or we may need a blood transfusion. Lets donate blood & help somebody.

WHO CAN DONATE BLOOD?

Any individual who is 18 years old, weighing at least 110 pounds, in good general health and not having donated blood during the last 90days.

BLOOD DONATION PROCESS

It is a simple & safe process. At any blood donation center, we need to fill up some details regarding the medical history & life style. Once we are found eligible, we are given a mini-physical check-up consisting of a pulse, blood pressure & iron-level check. This initial screening & physical exam takes approximately 20 minutes. Subsequently, we are directed to the donor area, where we sit & lie down in a comfortable position. The technician swabs our arm inside the elbow & inserts a needle into a vein. The needle is attached to a sterile plastic bag & the blood is drawn in 5 to 10 minutes time. Then the needle is removed  & a sterile bandage is put on our arm. We can then relax. But for the prick of the pin the whole process is absolutely painless & everything is finished in about 40 minutes. So, by giving a few minutes of our time we could be saving alife.

SIDE EFFECTS OF BLOOD DONATION

There are no side effects of Blood Donation & one need not  have any fears of catching infections also, as everything is done in a sterile atmosphere.

It is comforting to realize that an adult human body contains between 5 to 6 liters of blood depending on weight & size. A blood donation does not normally exceed 450 cc or about 8.0 % of our total blood volume. So we can rest assured that no harm will come to our body.

Our body replaces the blood volume or Plasma (liquid portion of blood containing proteins & minerals) within 24 hours & the red cells in a few weeks. It is advisable to have a good meal before the donation & have a healthy diet with plenty of fluids for atleast 24 hours after the donation.

WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR BLOOD AFTER DONATION?

We could save as many as four lives with one single donation. After
collection , the blood is separated into four different components - Red Cells, Plasma, Platelets & Cryoprecipitate - each used for different application.

WHEN BLOOD DONATION IS SO SIMPLE, SAFE & COSTS NOTHING & WHEN IT IS SO CRITICALLY NEEDED, WHAT CAN BE THERE TO STOP US FROM DONATING BLOOD & SAVE THE LIFE OF SOMEBODY.

THERE IS NO BIGGER & ALTRUISTIC A DONATION THAN GIVING YOUR BLOOD TO SAVE A STRANGER'S LIFE.
