Agnihotra is a process of purification of the atmosphere as a cumulative effect of various scientific principles harnessed to give rise to an unparalled purifying and healing phenomenon.
The process of Agnihotra consists of making two offerings to the fire exactly at the time of sunrise & sunset alongwith the chanting of two small Sanskrit mantras..

The offerings consist of two pinchfuls of uncooked rice grains smeared with a few drops of cow's pure ghee. The fire is prepared out of dried cowdung cakes in a small copper pot of a semi-pyramid shape.
The positive effects of Agnihotra are an outcome of simultaneous functioning of many subtle scientific principles such as, effect of chanting of specific sounds on the atmosphere and mind, energies emanating from the pyramid- shape, nutritional effect of burning of medicinal ingredients and the effects of bio-rhythms etc .

Agnihotra balances the cycle of nature and nourishes the human life.
It creates pure, clean and medicinal atmosphere...
It cleanses the negative effects of pollution.

The performance of Agnihotra creates pure, clean and medicinal atmosphere. It cleanses the negative effects of pollution on Prana. It relaxes the mind and unburdens the mind of all stress and strain. Regular practice of Agnihotra activates a healing cycle, making plants, animals happy and peaceful in it. Agnihotra is the simplest and easily practicable discipline for nurturing Total Surrender (Ishwar Pranidhan). Ishwar Pranidhan has been regarded as an alternative to the practice of Yoga and all other disciplines aimed at liberation. This is stated by the great seer Patanjali.

In today's polluted atmosphere, we witness Mass Destruction of forests, Disappearance of many species of plants, animals, insects, birds, Disturbance in Ecocycles,Ozone Depletion, Global Warming, Acid rain and Decreasing Agricultural Production. Human health is at stake. Many killing diseases like Cancer and AIDS are on the rise.. Increased alcoholism and drug abuse is a great challenge. Human mind is under great stress giving rise to more violence and many complex family and social problems. The list is unending.

If we want to live happily it is imperative to end the Vicious cycle by starting a Virtuous cycle. Agnihotra is the starting point of the virtuous cycle. With the regular practice of Agnihotra many of our problems will find their solutions automatically. As an individual you will find yourself a totally changed person! A stress-free & happy man! With Agnihotra you bring happiness to yourself and others. So you not only better yourself but also immensely contribute for the betterment of the world..

It is the process of purification of atmosphere with the agency of element fire.

Building The Agnihotra Fire
The main idea in building the Agnihotra fire is to arrange the cowdung pieces to allow for good air flow.. Many people find the following method helpful:

Spread a little ghee on each piece of dung. Place a small piece of dried dung in the bottom of the pyramid (see #1 below). Add two small pieces in opposing corners (#2). Continue adding pieces in alternating corners, using larger pieces as the pile grows (#3, 4, & 5).

To light the dung, spread ghee on a narrow piece of dung, ignite it, and place it flame downward in the center of the layers. The air flow will give you a fire that won't collapse as it burns.. Be sure your fire is blazing enough to burn the rice and ghee quickly and completely.

After the Mantras have been uttered and the rice offering given, it is best not to disturb the fire, due to the interplay of subtle energies. If possible, avoid moving the pyramid until the next time you prepare for Agnihotra.

A larger fire using more dried cowdung amplifies the healing effects and produces a greater quantity of healing ash.

Starting the Fire
Light the fire a few minutes before the scheduled time, so the dung will be fully ablaze at Agnihotra time. Do not use lighters (i.e. objects with lighter fluid) or gas stoves to start the fire.

Exactly at the sunrise or sunset time shown on the computer timesheet (based on one specific definition of sunrise and sunset) utter the Mantras and give the offerings of rice mixed with a little ghee to the fire, after each Sváhá. Say the Mantras once only. If you miss the timings you will not have the healing effect of Agnihotra. After each Agnihotra try to spare as many minutes as you can for meditation. You can sit in silence at least until the fire extinguishes itself. Collect the ash (at the next Agnihotra) and keep it in a container made of earthenware, glass or wood. DO NOT keep Agnihotra ash in a container made of plastic or metals other than copper or gold. Agnihotra ash can be used as fertilizer for plants or for making folk medicines for animals and humans. In South America it is called "miracle ash".

Timesheets

Timesheets are available free of charge, by request. Please give us several days notice when ordering time sheets. Please check to see if Daylight Savings Time (DST) has been calculated into your timesheet, and adjust the timing if needed. The latest timings program is available free of charge by email. This program prints the times in 24 hour format.

Rice
Use brown rice.. Highly polished rice loses nutritional value. We recommend organic grain.
Only unbroken grains of rice should be used for Agnihotra. If rice is broken, the subtle energy structure around the grain is altered; therefore the ash is not suitable for healing. The amount of rice for each offering is the amount you can hold in your fingertips.

Drying Dung
There are several ways to dry cowdung. Following are some suggestions for cold climate areas. The main point is that the dung should be dry, and if it is thin it will be easier to start the fires.

Use 4 pieces of 2" x 2" x 36" lumber for each screen. Nail them together into a square frame and cover with 1" chicken wire, 36 " wide, using wire staples to hold it down.. Place a piece of fiberglass window screen on top of this frame, but do not fasten it on. Place this frame over a piece of plywood ( 32" x 32" ) cut to fit inside the 2 x 2's. This gives you a flat surface on which to spread the dung. Place the plywood up on cinder blocks or other raised surface on which to work.

Collecting the dung
Use fresh manure from male or female progeny of cow. Use rubber gloves so that you can pick up the dung without getting any dirt, grass or rocks in it. Think good thoughts while collecting dung, as this heightens its healing effect. Spread the dung about 1/2" thick on the screen. Raise the frame up off the board for good air circulation and place it in full sun. Keep the dung from getting wet and it should dry in about four days, depending upon your climate. When you think it's dry, break a thicker piece and check the inside. Dry dung sounds hollow when you tap it with your finger.

Making Ghee
Ghee can be made from unsalted butter in an electric slow cooker (called a "crock pot"), or on a stove on very low heat. On the stove, let the pan be about two inches above the source of heat. The idea is that the butter heats very gently until all the white foam is cooked out and has risen to the surface. Whey also separates from the ghee, stays on the bottom of the pan and looks like water. Ghee is the golden liquid. The foam that collects on the surface can be spooned off and fed to animals. When the ghee has turned perfectly clear it is ready, and can be strained through cotton cloth, a coffee filter, or three white paper towels. Be careful not to mix in any of the clear liquid that is on the bottom of the pan.

Once you have removed as much ghee as possible without including any of the watery liquid, there will still be some ghee near the bottom of the pan which you do not want to waste. Refrigerate what is left in the pan, and when the ghee has hardened you can break it off the surface and add it to the next batch of ghee you make. Properly made ghee does not need to be refrigerated.

Aged ghee (five years old or more) is great for burns.

Agnihotra Mantras
There are vibrations that exist everywhere. Where there is vibration there is also sound.
When we do these Mantras, the sounds we utter activate these special vibrations that will
create certain atmosphere of effects. Then the desired results are realized. These vibrations
exist for everything, so anything can be activated, controlled or changed by Mantras. When one with a pure mind speaks the Mantra into the Agnihotra pyramid at the correct time,
the ash retains that energy and the healing properties of the ash become more powerful.

Ayurvedic (Agnihotra) Ghee Preparation:

Preparing ghee for Agnihotra is a simple process and one can easily make it in ones own home. The procedure to be followed is as follows -

cows_pureghee
  • The ghee is prepared from Cow’s milk.
  • Take the cow milk in a kitchen vessel and heat it slowly on your stove or heater.
  • Allow the milk to cool in the same vessel without keeping any lid.. One may use a net to cover it if necessary.
  • After a few hours a layer of cream will appear on the surface of the milk.
  • Remove this layer using a spoon and collect it in a separate jar.
  • Add a little curd to this cream in the jar.
  • Allow the mixture to stand still..
  • After about a day the cream in the jar would convert into curd.
  • Repeat the procedure up to point no. 5 daily by adding cream to the same jar. There is no need to add curd daily; the cream added daily keeps converting to curd.
  • After about a weeks time when sufficient amount (500 ml to 1 liter )of curd is collected, churn the curd thoroughly in a mixer or with a handheld portable churner. (The vessel used for churning should be sufficiently big to take all the curd and about as much water by volume)
  • Add water to this and keep churning till butter starts separating on the surface of the liquid.
  • Carefully collect the soft butter from the surface and put it in a frying pan, while doing this try to keep the liquid from coming in the frying pan. If some liquid does carry over in to the frying pan you can separate it by squeezing the butter with the open palm of one hand and tilting the pan with the other to drain as much liquid as possible.
  • Wash this butter with water and drain away the water completely as before. Repeat this washing once again.
  • Heat the butter over slow fire. Continue heating for a few minutes to ensure all the water content evaporates. You can judge this by the colour of the ghee, which becomes golden and the boiling stops.
  • The Ghee is ready. Allow it to cool and filter it through a fine strainer. Store in a dry jar with a lid.

STUDY FINDINGS
The Institute of Studies in Vedic Sciences has made humble efforts in documenting some of the studies.

At the defense institute of physiology and allied sciences (DIPAS) New Delhi, Dr. Selvamurthy (Sr. Scientist) studied the physiological effects of Agnihotra on the human mind and body. It was observed that during the performance of Agnihotra, the heart rate showed a declining trend, body temperature was raised, GSR remained significantly higher, ECG showed DC shift in base, EEG showed constant changes, power in Alpha band increased, while there was a tendency of suppression in delta power. t has been concluded that Agnihotra atmosphere has distinct beneficial effects on mind and body leading to mental tranquility.

Practice of Agnihotra has been found useful in drug and alcohol de-addiction programs conducted by Lt. Col. G.R. Golecha, (Sr. Advisor) Dep. of Psychiatry, Indian Army. It gives positive strength to the mind and enhances motivation to quit the addiction.

  1. Kirlian Photographs of human hand 10 minutes before and 10 minutes after Agnihotra. After Agnihotra photograph showed increased energy with healing effect.

  2. Kirlian photographs of living Spearmint plant before Agnihotra showed 'red surrounding' meaning aggressiveness. After Agnihotra photographs showed 'blue surrounding' meaning relaxation.

Agnihotra ash and its resultant atmosphere is being employed as useful in Ecological-Farming practices. Hundreds of farmers are regularly practicing Agnihotra farming methods. The fruits, vegetables and grains grown by this method are qualitatively better in texture, taste and size as compared to controlled farms where regular use of pesticides and fertilizers is done.. Agnihotra atmosphere induces rapid seed germination. Agnihotra ash is an effective fertilizer and helps in releasing soluble phosphate from the soil.

PRELIMINARY STUDIES ON THE EFFECT OF HOMA FARMING ON THE YIELD AND INCIDENCE OF LEAP SPOT, MYCOSPHAERELLA BRASSICICOLA IN CABBAGE Cv. QUESTO N.

Selvaraj, B. Ramraj, N. Seenivasan and K. Shoba

Horticulturalk Research Station, Vijayanagaram, Ooty-643001

The byproduct of Homa farming called Agnihotra ash, is obtained by burning dry cow dung, cow ghee and unbroken raw rice in an inverted copper pyramid plate at the time of sunrise and sunset with chanting specific Vedic mantras.

It was believed that adoption of homa farming in agricultural field completely sterilized the environment and cleared the field from pathogens..

Hence , an experiment was conducted to study the effect of foliar spraying of Agnihotra ash ( 200 gram of Agnihotra ash in 1 liter cow urine kept for three days for fermentation and dissolved in 10 liter of water) for the management of leaf spot caused by Mycosphaerella Brassicicola on Cabbage cv. Questo during the main season 2001-202 at horticultural Research Station, Ooty, Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu.

The treatments comprised of spraying of Agnihotra ash 5 times at 10 days interval, spraying mancozeb 0.2% 5 times at 10 days interval and untreated control.

The results revealed that foliar application of Agnihotra ash has increased the yield of Cabbage by 38.8 % And reduced the leaf spot by 70.6% OVER untreated control.

FAQ's

Who can perform Agnihotra?

The practice of Agnihotra is simple, easily adoptable and universal. It may be performed by any one irrespective of barriers like religion, sect, cast, creed, nationality, colour, sex & age. Women & children can also practice it.

Can Agnihotra be performed at home?

Agnihotra can be performed in any room or place in any house. It can also be performed in the balcony of the house. While performing Agnihotra in a family at one place, only one person should make the offerings. Other members of the family present , too can derive the resultant beneficial effects of the purified and nutritious atmosphere.. If two persons from the same family are desirous of performing Agnihotra individually, they should prepare fire in separate Agnihotra pots and make offerings. Agnihotra can also be performed in a farm or a garden adjoining your house.

Why is there a difference between the visible sun rise/set timing and the one given in the timetable on some days?

There is always a difference between visible and actual (Mathematical) Sun rise/set timings. There are certain factors, which cause such a difference, of which the main factor is REFRACTION of suns rays due to atmospheric belt around earth. Refraction in its turn depends upon temperature, moisture and density of atmosphere at a point of visible horizon.

On land the difference between actual (mathematical) Sun rise/set time and visible Sun rise/set time may have some consistency as the curvature of earth and apparent horizon remains on the same point. Only density of atmosphere and temperature may change... But this is not the case when we are observing the Sun rise/set on horizon on sea.. Sun rise/set point on horizon on sea is fluctuating due to low and high tides and curvature of sea. Due to these factors, difference between actual and visible time may vary.

Another factor is the different concepts of sun rise/set. Different people follow different concepts e.g..
Upper rim of the Sun disc touches horizon.
Half of the Sun disc above horizon.
Full disc above horizon, lower rim touches horizon.
While observing sunrise-sunset we should stick up to one of the three concepts for consistency and then compare it with mathematical timings.

Now at the time of Sunrise though the sun is actually below horizon, because of refraction of the light rays through the earth’s atmosphere, virtual image of Sun appears on the horizon and the difference between actual (mathematical) sunrise and visible sunrise will depend upon the different factors mentioned above.

At the time of Sun set, virtual image of sun remains on the horizon for some time though the sun is actually below horizon.. Here also difference in visible and actual timings may vary because of the factors mentioned above.

Now we will take a concrete example.

At Kanyakumari on 1/1/96, actual (mathematical) Sun rise time is 6.37 A.M. But because of refraction, virtual image of Sun appears on horizon before 6.37 A.M. We can actually see Sun appearing on the Horizon before 6.37. Virtual image can be seen on horizon 2 to 6 minutes earlier depending upon the factors mentioned above. So on 1/1/96, visible Sunrise time may vary from 6.30 to 6.36 A.M. where actual Sun rise is at 6..37.

Similarly Sun set time on 1/1/96 at Kanyakumari is 6.09 P.M.. Bur even after 6.09 P.M. virtual image of Sun remains on the horizon. So even after Sun set Sun can be visible on horizon for 2 to 6 minutes depending upon the factors mentioned above. Though actual Sun set is 6..09, visible Sunset time may vary from 6.10 to 6.15 P.M.

This is very general explanation for difference in actual/visible Sun rise/set timings without going in to mathematical details of the phenomenon.

We use a computer program as received form Germany, which gives accurate Sun rise/set timings of a particular place after providing correct longitude and latitude of that place.

For Agnihotra purpose we can use actual (mathematical) sunrise sunset timings.

If I start Agnihotra in my house can my other family members perform it?

Yes, If due to any reason one is not in a position to perform/attend Agnihotra himself on some occasions, any other family member can perform it. Agnihotra can be taken up as a personal discipline or as a family discipline. Even if it is taken up as a personal discipline and if one is unable to perform on a particular occasion any other family member or friend can do it and keep the healing cycle unbroken. When an Agnihotra is practiced in a place then every one including animals and plants, in its atmosphere is benefited..

Should all members of the family offer the oblations to fire?

Agnihotra can be taken up as a family discipline where any one member of the family offers the oblations and the rest attend Agnihotra. The others can join in chanting the Agnihotra mantras but only one person should offer oblation to fire in one Agnihotra pot.. If all or more than one members of the family wish to take it up as a personal discipline they can do so in the same house in different pots.

Can the Agnihotra mantras be translated in to other languages?

Agnihotra mantras should not be translated.. A mantra is a unique combination of sound vibrations and purport. Their utterance in esoteric combination produces unique healing sound waves which have wonderful effect on the atoms of the body, mind and atmosphere.. It has tremendous peaceful effect on the mind. This is revealed knowledge and the language used is Sanskrit. Translating the mantras in other language would change the frequency patterns & thus will not produce the vibrational effect of the mantra.

Is Cow dung the only material that can be used to prepare Agnihotra fire?

Dried cakes made from the dung of Cow family can be used for preparing the Agnihotra Fire. It need not necessarily be of a cow. The dung of bull or a calf may as well be used to make dried cakes. However any material other than the dung of Cow family should not be used.

Fresh cow dung as well as fumes produced by burning dry cow dung cakes have healing properties. It is capable of eradicating harmful bacteria. It is observed that cow-dung and the ash produced from its use in Agnihotra has power to control the dangerous effects of radiation.

Which direction should I face while performing Agnihotra?

There is no hard and fast rule about which direction to face while performing Agnihotra. Because Agnihotra is related to Sunrise and Sunset, you may, if you are in a position to determine the direction, face east for performing the sunrise Agnihotra and west for sunset Agnihotra. However please be informed that there is no such rule in the basic disciplines of Agnihotra.

What happens when Agnihotra performance is discontinued due to travelling or other reasons?

If the cycle of daily morning-evening Agnihotra performance is by any chance discontinued on an occasion or two do not worry about it. Resume the practice immediately from the next Agnihotra time and continue it. If the person regularly performing the Agnihotra in the home has to go out of station for work or if he is not able to be present in the house at that Agnihotra time, any other member of the family can perform Agnihotra. If the entire family has to go out then a friend or a neighbour can be requested to perform Agnihotra in your house.

This helps in keeping the 'healing cycle' of Agnihotra unaffected. The person going out can carry a spare Agnihotra kit with him so that he can perform Agnihotra wherever he is at the local sunrise/sunset time. Are there any tips on how to make the Agnihotra fire?

Fire should be fully ablaze in the pot before Agnihotra time. It consumes offerings forthwith. After the Agnihotra let the fire subside by itself. Do not try to extinguish it by any other method. Do not disturb it in any manner, nor put any other material in it. While lighting the fire a few drops of cow's ghee can be put over the cakes or cow's ghee can be applied on the dry cow dung pieces before lighting them... Dry twigs of 'Vata' (Banayan tree), Audumbara, Palaash, Peepal and Bel can be used .These contain medicinal properties. To start the Fire one may use Gugul, Cotton-Wicks soaked in ghee or Camphor tablets. Arrange the pieces of cowdung in a log cabin fashion .This will allow the air to pass freely. Keep the Agnihotra place clean and tidy.

What do you do with the pot and ash after Agnihotra?

Remove the Agnihotra ash from the pot and store it in a bag or box. This ash can be used as an effective fertilizer for your kitchen garden and agriculture. Furthermore this ash can also be used as a healing substance. Do not throw this ash in a dustbin .Dropping the Agnihotra ash in wells, rivers and water-reservoirs is extremely beneficial.

What do you do before and after an Agnihotra performance?

One may take a bath before the Agnihotra time. If a bath in the evening is not possible, take a wash before the Agnihotra time. After making the Agnihotra offering sit peacefully for a few minutes. After performing Agnihotra you can engage yourself, if that is your regular practice, in other spiritual pursuits like Meditation or Self-study etc. The Agnihotra atmosphere will be an aid in your efforts.
