The Art of Living Part 1 Course
What is this course all about?
Everyone wants more happiness, love and peace of mind. What keeps us from increasing these qualities in our lives is stress. Often we don’t realize the degree to which stress clouds our natural enthusiasm, saps our energy, interferes in our relationships, and affects our health. The Art of Living Course is designed to enable you to release layers of stress, removing blocks to the increased energy and joy natural to the human condition. Most people come away from the courses feeling energized and refreshed, having just dropped a lot of tension and stress. Participants commonly report that their health improved, their awareness increases, and they feel a greater sense of ease in their lives. Others report an improvement in relationships, greater creativity, and increased mental clarity. Techniques from the Art of Living Course are simple to learn, easy to practice.
The course is developed and promoted by the Art of Living Foundation (http://www.artofliv ing.org), an international nonprofit, educational, charitable, and humanitarian organization that is dedicated to serving society by strengthening the individual. The foundation offers programs that eliminate stress and create a sense of belonging.
What techniques are taught in the Art of Living Course?
The Art of Living course integrates modern methods with timeless wisdom. Ancient practices of yoga and rhythms of breathing are combined in novel ways. A 6-session program across 6 consecutive days (each session last 2 to 3 hours) helps increase energy, positivity, confidence and creativity. The class consists of a dash of yoga mixed with a variety of breathing and deep relaxation techniques and topped off with group interaction. The Art of Living Course offers the practical wisdom on how to live gracefully in a stressful world. And also the deep experience necessary to put that knowledge into action.
Where has this course been taught?
Renowned as one of the most effective courses for stress elimination, the Art of Living course has been conducted in over 140 countries to people from all walks of life. The Art of Living course has been offered to students in various campuses including Stanford, UC Berkeley, MIT, Duke, Oxford, Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Management and many others. In MIT it is offered by the Physical education department. Nova Southeastern University has offered the Art of Living course as part of its regular curriculum since 1999. The Art of Living course is finding increased popularity in corporations as reports in CNN and Asiaweek. Specialized Art of Living courses have been offered to pre-teens and teenagers, prison inmates, homeless persons, HIV+ individuals and cancer patients.
What are the principles underlying the Art of Living Course?
Students are taught yogic breathing and a powerful rhythms breathing technique called Sudarshan Kriya. These techniques have received worldwide recognition for their effectiveness in conflict resolution, stress management, and health improvement. Research studies published in scientific journals (e.g. Biological Psychiatry, Journal of Affective Disorders) have demonstrated that the Sudarshan Kriya is effective in increasing lung capacity and combating depression. A summary of research findings is presented by Dr. James Farrow, gastroenterologist and art of living practitioner, in the DVD “Science of the Breath”.
At a symposium in March 2002 organized by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. Richard Brown, a Columbia University psychiatrist, said the kriya’s rapid breath causes the release of the “love” hormone oxytocin that is known to play a crucial role in bonding in humans and other primates. “If someone’s well, it helps them deal with everyday stress,” said Brown in Stop Depression Now (Penguin/Putnam, 1999). “But if someone’s depressed or has post-traumatic stress disorder, the breathing can also be astonishingly helpful. “Dr. Brown routinely refers patients and colleagues to Art of Living courses.

Advance Course
The Part II course is about true relaxation. It provides an opportunity to dive deeper into one's inner self... your body, mind and spirit will experience deep rest, rejuvenation and inner transformation. The course includes a combination of Silence, Sadhana (practise and meditation), Satsang (celebration) and Seva (service). Silence takes you deeper into yourself, Sadhana builds energy, Satsang maintains it (elevating consciousness) and finally this energy is channeled through Seva. One of the powerful processes you will experience on a Part II course is keeping silence. The practice of silence has been known throughout the ages, in many different traditions and cultures, as a great tool for enhancing self-discovery. Maintaining silence, for even a few days, can have remarkable effects on the system, reviving energy and enthusiasm, and providing deep rest for the mind and body. Other elements of the course include building energy through yoga asanas (postures) and understanding the value and importance of service to enhance ones growth. The course lasts from 4 days for the PartII and is frequently offered as a residential course in retreat-like natural settings.
