Love often fades because of ego. Ego prevents us from truly experiencing life. Spirituality is a journey of shedding layers of self-importance. We are so immersed in the concept of ‘I’ that it blocks genuine experiences. Moving from ‘I am something’ to ‘I am nothing’ and from ‘I belong to everyone and everyone belongs to me’ is when true love begins to flourish.
Love inherently knows how to give and connect. Love asks, ‘What can I do for you?’ whereas attachment asks, ‘What can you do for me?’ You've likely heard people say, ‘You can't even do this much for me.’ That is attachment speaking. Love, in its purest form, always asks, ‘What can I do for the other person?’—this is unconditional love. When you love someone selflessly without expecting anything in return, it will come back to you in countless ways. Whatever you give to the universe will surely return. If it hasn’t, perhaps it’s worth reflecting on whether you ever truly gave it.
