Wholeness is a myth - Now Showing at Silver Street Studios

  • Mon, Jun 30, 2025 - Sat, Sep 20, 2025  10am - 5pm

Silver Street Studios
2000 Edwards Street

Sawyer Yards is proud to present Wholeness is a myth, a juried exhibition curated by artist and juror Kaima Marie Akarue, featuring works from both current artists and alumni of the Sawyer Yards campus. This exhibition challenges traditional ideas of unity, exploring the tension between individuality and collectivity, distinction and cohesion.

Akarue’s selection process emphasizes contrast over conformity, assembling a diverse collection of works that reflect the layered identities of artists who have shared the creative spaces of Sawyer Yards — past and present — while maintaining their own distinct visual languages. Rather than suggesting harmony as the resolution to difference, Wholeness is a myth asks: What if distinction is not an obstacle to wholeness, but its very foundation?

By bringing together artists across generations of the Sawyer Yards community, this exhibition invites viewers to consider how personal, cultural, and artistic identities are shaped through connection. In a time when division is often highlighted, these works insist on a more profound truth: wholeness isn’t about becoming one thing — it’s about embracing the complexity of what we’ve always been.

Be the Art: The Silos Selfie Experience

  • Fri, May 23, 2025 - Sat, Aug 9, 2025  9am - 5pm On view

The Silos at Sawyer Yards
1502 Sawyer Street

The artists of the Silos at Sawyer Yards are proud to announce Be the Art: The Silos Selfie Experience, a new exhibition of works by tenant studio artists for the summer months!

In this age when art is consumed and proliferated through screens, the artists have been prompted to display large-scale, almost immersive works that invite people to photograph them or to take selfies with them. The Silos artists are diverse, and work in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media and more. Each work included features a statement from the artist, providing some insights into the inspirations behind their choices in media, color, composition, and narrative.

The exhibition is on view in the corridors of the Silos at Sawyer Yards studio building through August 9, 2025.

John Perretti: Of Tunnels, Time and Tumult

  • Sat, Aug 2, 2025 - Sat, Sep 13, 2025  9am - 5pm On view

  • Saturday, Aug 9, 2025  5:30pm - 8:30pm Opening Reception

Bay 100 Gallery at The Silos at Sawyer Yards
1502 Sawyer Street

Renowned artist, martial arts innovator, and storyteller John Perretti presents his most expansive—and final—exhibition, Of Tunnels, Time and  Tumult, at the Bay 100 Gallery at The Silos at Sawyer Yards in Houston, Texas. Marking his 69th year of life, this powerful and immersive show features over 50 works, including  large-scale paintings and sculptural installations, each offering a raw, layered journey through  myth, memory, combat, and cosmic reflection.

Perretti, a cultural shape-shifter equally known for coining the term “Mixed Martial Arts” as for his deeply conceptual artworks, draws on a lifetime of experience spanning the battlefield of the ring and the quiet discipline of the studio. His work fuses classical draftsmanship with emotive  abstraction, often inspired by historical trauma, poetic memory, sexuality, and the frailty of human  perception.

"Of Tunnels, Time and Tumult" invites viewers into a world where angelic light collides with trench  warfare, where Sumerian myth whispers through elliptical color fields, and where a rabbit—drawn  from his son's childhood painting—finds itself surrounded by knives in both innocence and peril. It is a body of work that is as vulnerable as it is unflinching.

“This is the show of my life,” says Perretti. “I want the audience to feel the time I’ve lived, the tunnels  I’ve traveled through, and the tumult I’ve never stopped documenting; I want them to feel as if I had  put my hands on them.”

This final exhibition presents a culmination of themes that have shaped Perretti’s creative evolution:  violence and grace, truth and distortion, collapse and transcendence. Works range from poignant  graphite studies done in youth to massive oil paintings echoing Turner’s turbulent skies, Kiefer’s  historical ghosts, and Twombly’s chaotic lyricism. The sculptures—crafted from black walnut,  iron, and hybrid materials—evoke sacred architecture, battlefield debris, and future relics.

About the Artist: John Perretti is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, writer, and a mixed martial arts pioneer. His  work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, and Houston. A former professor at the School of Visual Arts and a member of the Screen Actors Guild, Perretti is also the founder of Tao Jutsu Do  (founded 1974) and a co-creator of Extreme Fighting. He is the author of The Origin of a Species and the Mixed Martial Arts and has been inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame as a Living Legend. His working studio is C255 at Winter Street Studios.

The Art of Life

  •  Aug 2, 2025 - Sat, Aug 30, 2025

  • Saturday, Aug 9, 2025  1pm - 5pm Art Reception

The Silos at Sawyer Yards Bay 300 Gallery

The Art of Life is a vibrant and deeply personal exhibition by Julie Pickett, an artist who discovered her creative voice later in life through the transformative power of painting. Each piece in this collection serves as both a reflection and celebration of the human journey—marked by resilience, rediscovery, and the beauty of imperfection. Drawing from her own experience of finding healing and purpose through art after a major life change, Julie uses bold colors, expressive forms, and intentional patterns to explore themes of identity, feminine strength, and divine creativity.

What makes The Art of Life unique is its origin in real emotional depth and spiritual awakening. Rather than adhering to a specific style or convention, Pickett’s work is an intuitive response to lived experience—each canvas a declaration of inner liberation and growth. Visitors can expect to encounter artwork that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant, offering a powerful testament to the idea that it is never too late to begin again, and that the act of creation itself can be a sacred form of healing.

Julie Pickett is a self-taught artist who began painting at the age of 50, discovering her creative voice amidst personal adversity. What began as an act of emotional survival quickly evolved into a profound journey of self-discovery, healing, and liberation. Drawing from her lived experiences and the wisdom gained through womanhood, Julie creates bold, expressive works that blend vibrant color, design sensibility, and spiritual reflection.

Her art stands as a celebration of feminine strength, the beauty of imperfection, and the sacred nature of becoming. Each piece is both deeply personal and universally resonant—inviting viewers to explore their own identities and emotions through her intuitive, heartfelt compositions. Through her work, Pickett reminds us that it is never too late to begin again, and that creativity has the power to transform pain into beauty and silence into voice.

New art comes to the Rotunda Gallery as we welcome our August Artist of the Month—Yvette Grutter. Yvette is a Mexican, Swiss, and American artist born in Mexico City who has dedicated her practice to the preservation and reinvention of handmade paper art, exploring its connection to ancestral traditions and its application in the modern artistic context. She fuses traditional painting and other techniques to create vibrant, yet simplistic works. Utilizing natural elements like her hand-made paper, pressed flowers, plants, and sand, as well as prints, her work emphasizes the singular beauty in natural imagery, allowing the viewers to create their own narratives.

Blya Krouba & Cat Martinez

Roots in Frame

Roots in Frame is an immersive installation by Blya Krouba and Cat Martinez that explores the West African origins of shotgun houses, highlighting the profound historical ties, architectural lineage, and cultural continuity of the African diaspora. Using photographs on organza fabric, Krouba creates a narrative of lived experiences of African and African American family life framed by a life-sized steel structure by Martinez that references the quintessential Southern vernacular style of architecture. The project collocates both voluntary and forced migration, showcasing how these histories shape community and identity. By blending traditional and modern elements, Roots in Frame celebrates the resilience and unity of African and African American cultures, creating a dialogue that explores cultural identity and family life across continents.

Byla Krouba is a mixed media artist, born in Côte d’Ivoire and raised in the United States. She received her BA from the University of Pittsburgh and MFA in Photography and Digital Media from the University of Houston. Her work asks questions about social justices through equitable representations of Black women. Through a deep connection to her faith, Krouba’s practice extends into seeking deeper truths and declares hope in detaching identity from trauma. Krouba’s work has been featured in recent exhibitions at Blaffer Art Museum, Alvin Community College, and Elgin Street Studios, as well as the PAGE Imagine America Conference (New Orleans) and BEAK Visions Photo Therapeutic Experience (Houston).

@_iambeak

Cat Martinez is a Houston-based visual artist whose work incorporates mixed media sculpture, metals, fibers, and mold making to craft evocative works that traverse the intricate landscapes of the African diaspora. She received her BFA and MFA in sculpture from the University of Houston. Her dedication to collaborative and impactful storytelling extends to her participation in the We Here Black Women's Arts Collective and Road Trip Collective. Martinez’ work has been featured in recent exhibitions at Lanecia Rouse Tinsley Gallery, the University Museum at Texas Southern University, Houston Museum of African American Culture, Project Row Houses, DiverseWorks, the Station Museum, Lawndale Art Center, and Blaffer Art Museum.

If you could make a small contribution using Zelle to my email address, confide...@yahoo.com or 832-656-9671 I would really appreciate the help.

You can also help by sharing this with everyone you know on social media and by subscribing.

Thank all of you who have already contributed!!!
