Subject: opensource and crowdsource applied to gun manufacturing

hi vivek,

this could be a topic that you can pose to your students...

this video shows a technology called "rapid prototyping" or "additive manufacturing" being used for making firearms: 3D printed guns

a self manufactured gun has no serial numbers and is untraceable. it can be made wherever and whenever by anyone. it can also be melted and destroyed after use. the above video also talks about how legislature takes 6 to 7 years to catch up to the consequences of today's technologies.

the technology for rapid prototyping (rep-rap) is being developed to be fully autonomous such that a rep-rap can have the intelligence to manufacture other rep-rap and each machine can self repair while making other artifacts.

here is a snippet of work done at MIT: http://cba.mit.edu/events/13.03.scifab/index.html

and here is rep-rap overdose

imagine a boston big dog with a gun turret entirely manufactured by machines which were made by machines and there is no way to find out who all put together the initial bots.

best,
sam
