Dr. Nash,

I endorse your proposal.  I'm spreading it around.

Blessings!

Dear Steve,

Yes, you MUST see Avatar.  Go to the trouble to see it in 3D.  It's excruciating and inspiring all at the same time.  Good medicine for these days.

Yeah, the possibility of ramming through a shitty health care deal is real.  I am bummed with our VT delegation on many fronts, not least of which is their attempt to make these crappy bills sound like they're actually going to benefit folks.  I also feel that they have been sidestepping the issue of whether an eventual bill might constrain Vermont's ability to create a better system at the state level.  There are single payer bills in both houses of the VT legislature this session.  Even if they could pass in the current budgetary crisis (of course single payer would be a great cure for many budgetary woes in the medium to long-term, but when do politicians think beyond short-term--especially in an election year?), will we be allowed to enact such a system under the Federal "health care reform" legislation?  I have written and called Bernie's office about this repeatedly and don't feel like I've gotten a straight answer.  Welch's office has been useless, but I expect that from them...

Blah blah blah.  On a happier front, just came from a meeting with a friend who has retired and is interested in starting an organization, tentatively called Community Health Helpers, which would deploy a group of (trained) lay people to help Vermonters in ways we used to depend on family for--go to doctors' visits with them, help them understand what's up with their health, help them come up with practical strategies for maintaining and improving their health, and then being with them to support them in implementing those strategies over time.  There is SUCH a need for this kind of help in every community I've ever lived in--and, most importantly to those who control funding sources, this kind of help will save big bucks and keep people out of emergency rooms and our desperately understaffed medical primary care clinics.  I feel like this is one small pragmatic step in the process of transitioning from our utterly inhumane and non-caring "health care system" to a grassroots, sustainable health network...Got to go write emails to support this process now!

Nice chatting with you today--
Lisa
