CIA Director Leon Panetta said the terror organisation was deploying operatives to the US to carry out new attacks from inside the country, including "clean" recruits with a negligible trail of terrorist contacts. Al Qaeda was also inspiring homegrown extremists [!] to trigger violence on their own, he said.
Intelligence chief acknowledges U.S. may kill Americans involved in terrorism 04 Feb 2010 Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair acknowledged Wednesday that government agencies may kill U.S. citizens abroad who are involved in terrorist activities if they are "taking action that threatens Americans." Blair told members of the House intelligence committee that he was speaking publicly about the issue to reassure Americans that intelligence agencies and the Department of Defense "follow a set of defined policy and legal procedures that are very carefully observed" in the use of lethal force against U.S. citizens.

US, British and Afghan forces will flood into a Taliban enclave in southern Helmand province in a massive show of force intended as a decisive start to President Barack Obama's "surge" of 30,000 extra troops. The operation is expected to involve up to 15,000 personnel and could last between six and eight weeks.

Three US soldiers killed in Pakistan bomb blast 03 Feb 2010 Three American soldiers have been killed by a roadside bomb on a politically sensitive military 'training' mission in Pakistan's turbulent border region. The soldiers, who are believed to have been special forces, died on Wednesday when their convoy was hit by a remote-controlled explosion as they drove to the opening ceremony of a girls' school newly renovated with American aid. Their deaths are the first known US military fatalities on Pakistani soil.

New York charges Bank of America, Lewis over Merrill deal 04 Feb 2010 The New York Attorney General's office said Thursday it is filing civil charges against Bank of America and its former CEO Ken Lewis, saying the bank misled investors about Merrill Lynch when it acquired the Wall Street bank in late 2008. Civil charges were also being filed against Joe Price, the bank's former chief financial officer. Price is now head of the bank's consumer banking division.
