Ars Phoné: How come the name of MANSION HOUSE ?
Gerardo Tristano: It sounds good also in Italian.
AP: What does it mean?
GT: The idea of a shore. When you on sailing see by far a building.
AP: The last?
GT: The first. I means there is much to do.
AP: Are these musicians up to do it?
GT: Yes, they are.
AP: Why in London? Maybe the convergence of old and new?
GT: Many reasons. That one does not seem very smart. The convergence
of which you talk is not a very point of view. What does it mean old
and new? I think not. The problem is to pass over such a question,
doing better. This is the very core of your concept.
AP: It seems without any foundation…
GT: The only possibility is to overcome this aporia, coming to assume
it all.
AP: Music is possibility?
GT: Music is creation.
AP: Then?
GT: History does not help us, it only judges.
AP: What kind of future do you see about music? GT: Electron music is
a wrong term we use for an expression that nothing has to do with
music. We must not mix the words, I think actually that MUSIC-
ELETTRONIC is a an antithetical couple of terms. What we really can
see is an absurd escape of the first toward the second and viceversa,
with no chance of contamination, because in my opinion this is really
impossible ab origine. Of course the two are not mutually exclusive.
Anyway I would like to say yet that the sound waves are without no
doubt a certain future with its own applications that truly they are
endless. As to me I have much to do with my own papers and many works
of mine.
AP: Well. What is minimalism in music?
GT: Minimalism is many things. I do not want to call it in other way,
but it is also deeply creative. It passes through many interchanges of
multicreative ideas and it informs life in all its aspects, except
death.
AP: What is the most beautiful piece you have ever written?
GT: I like them all.
AP: MANSION HOUSE in Italy?
GT: I hope soon, but also in USA it would be good.
