Appearance:
Deep amber with copper lights. Excellent beading. Good legs. Nose: Mellow and quite drying, with light prickle. The first impression is faintly medicinal and mossy, with just a faint hint of grapefruit, becoming lightly oily; beneath this is a sweet suggestion of toffee and a faint hint of fragrant smoke (a Clynelish aficionado hunting for a note of snuffed candle may think this an echo of it). All of this is comparatively shy and closed. A little water increases the hint of toffee and introduces a balsa wood note.

Palate:
Smoothly oily, the texture is lightly waxy and tooth- coating. The taste is surprisingly sweet to start and apple- fruity at first, then quickly very drying and soon, chilli- pepper spicy. A toffee apple with burnt edges comes to mind. A little water helps bring up the sweetness and reduce the spiciness.
Finish:
A good length, with a spicy kick and a mouth-cooling aftertaste which at the same time has warming Szechuan pepper-spice. Sweeter with a drop of water and now salty; the spice is reduced.

Clynelish 1996 16 YO from the independent bottler Blackadder had been matured in a sherry butt, cask number 8782. It was distilled 8 October 1996 and bottled in august 2013 into 528 bottles. I tasted from bottle 485.
The whisky is from the Raw Cask series. Blackadder uses a special bottling process for the Raw Cask to make sure that every bottle contains its own share of the cask sediments as well as of natural oils and fats that might otherwise be left behind when filling a cask strength whisky straight from cask. Very nice, I think!
Nose (21/25): A fruity smell at first. I detected mango, which is not something I usually get from a whisky. There were some maltiness to it. And it was waxy. I have come to learn that waxiness is something that is often used to describe Clynelish.
What makes this whisky a 'first' and a "last": This whisky is matured in experimental casks - PX/Oloroso seasoned European Oak. They are the first and last of their kind from 1996 and are therefore incredibly rare.
Why was this bottle chosen as part of the fourth release of Prima & Ultima?: A first and last of the kind, these two experimental Pedro Ximenez/Oloroso Casks seasoned European Oak butts provide a new rich sweetness and darkness to this one of a kind Clynelish. Filled in 1996 this maturation has brought a more powerful taste to Clynelish's crisp charm and is a tribute to those unafraid to plough into a new furrow.

A single cask 1996 Clynelish bottled as an 18-year-old without colouring or chill filtration in 2014 by Hunter Laing for their Old & Rare series. This one was matured in a single refill hogshead cask with an outturn of 304 bottles at 54.9%.
Almost all the 1996 Clynelish we've tasted so far have been excellent and this seems to be a peak age and cask type for them. If you like fresh, complex, coastal, characterful whisky then this should be perfect.

I was ecstatic to find this, now rare whiskey that has stupidly been discontinued. A beautiful fine, rich whiskey, I was super happy with the delivery service via DHL - from payment to door - brilliant service and highly recommended.
