Hello Natalia,
Thank you for your quick reply - your questions are importat.
We are thinking of launching parallel actions in 2 separate locations
so as to test the feasibility of the model in multiple contexts and
the possibility of its smooth coordination across borders. Indeed, if
our ambition is to establish a learning program that is consistent on
a wider international scale we feel we should start from the outset
developing it as such and attending to its specific challenges. Also,
that is aligned with one of the criteria for this EU program which is
precisely to foster the cooperation of organizations from different
countries over common transnational projects.
Regarding the involvement of your department, the idea was not so much
to open the way for a building exercise out there, which actually we
are just considering to pilot in Porto and Istanbul for now, but to
bring into the design of this learning program the expertise in
internationally relevant architectural education which we recognize
from looking at your Design Research Studio or the EcoHouse
Initiative. So for this purpose your department could be a very
valuable partner, more so than the Architects Without Borders whose
input in the network would already be less complementary to ours.
Having said that the idea is still being formed and open to every
contribution so let me know what your course director says of all
this.
Thank you once again for taking an interest!
Kind regards,
Jose

Thank you for writing. This sounds very exciting! May I ask why do
you propose other locations in Europe? Would it not be better to
expand in the context of Porto, at least for the time being? You
have developed a degree of expertise in this context and I think it
would be great to see how such an initiative could impact the city
on a substantial scale. Or perhaps other cities in Portugal could be
testing grounds for the transposition of the idea first? Somehow I
feel this would make the project more robust and consistent.
I also thought that a way of taking the project forward could be a
partnership with FAUP, whereby the placement would constitute a
studio within the students' architectural program - an
apprenticeship of sorts. Surely getting local architects involved in
the Historic Centre and developing a culture of maintenance would be
invaluable. What do you think?
Once I have heard back from you, I will discuss this with my course
director and get back to you shortly. We also have Architectes Sans
Frontiers at the Department in Cambridge that might want to be
involved.
Very best,
Natalia

www.arrebita.org [1] [2]Hello Natalia,
There was an exciting development resulting from our research of
the
opportunities offered by the new Erasmus + framework which you
referred us to last week. Amongst the several programs in there,
we
found one called "Strategic Partnerships" that aims to fund
innovative
practices in the fields of education, training and youth and
which
would be great to better structure and validate Arrebita as an
educational model for recent graduates in architecture and
engineering
and take the first steps towards its dissemination at an European
scale. Indeed, the experience already gained in 2 years has shown
to
us the unquestionable value of this project in transferring
practical, professional and managerial skills to young
professionals
in ways that complement universities and believe very much in the
potential of this to become a wide spread form of learning. You
can
read more about the aims of the Strategic Partnerships between
pages
95 and 107 of the guidelines [1] and see to what extent it is
bespoke
to our proposal also described briefly in the file attached.
One of the keys aspects of this program though is the cooperation
across borders of organizations and thus the reason to writing
being
to probe your interest in mobilizing your school into this
Strategic
Partnership. We are now building a network of companies and
higher
education institutions to design and implement Arrebita across 2
or 3
locations in Europe and looking at your design research studio as
well
as initiatives such as its EcoHouse think that your department at
Cambridge could be ideally suited. So, let me know if you are at
all
intrigued and feel there is scope to further explore this
partnership.
The deadline for applications though is April 30th and we need
to
move fast in order to consolidate the consortium and prepare the
submission.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Kind regards,
Jose
