I noticed that Arora claims support on embedded Linux. Does this mean
it runs directly on top of the framebuffer device? How good is the
support for this? Does the source include docs for building?

Arora sits on top of Qt which can be compiled for the frame buffer. Simply compile Arora against qt embedded and you are set.
